Cycling in Slovenia

Emerald rivers, the Vršič mountain, wine villages and endless gravel: a small country with a great adventure.

Slovenia is small, but full of variety. Just a few hours away from each other lie the Julian Alps with Vršič and Mangart, green-blue lakes and rivers, the wine hills of Brda and a stretch of the Adriatic coast. It is the country of Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič, and you can feel it: cyclists are welcome everywhere.

Why cycle in Slovenia?

  • Everything is close by. From the Alps to the sea, it's a day's cycling. A week is enough to combine mountains, lakes, wine country and the coast.
  • Quiet roads. Outside of Ljubljana and Bled, the roads are quiet, even in the summer.
  • World-class climbing. The Vršič with its cobblestone paths, the Mangart saddle as the highest road in the country and the panoramic road through the Logar Valley.
  • Gravel and bikepacking. Forest paths, gravel roads and single tracks between the pines, and a land that you can completely traverse on a multi-day trip.

The four regions

  • Alpines of Slovenia: the most difficult climbs and the greatest views. Kranjska Gora, Bled, Bohinj, the Soča Valley and Bovec are located here.
  • Central Slovenia: around Ljubljana, Kamnik and Škofja Loka. Alternating terrain that opens up quickly as soon as you leave the city.
  • Mediterranean SloveniaCoastal roads, the Karst and the hills above the Adriatic Sea, with Piran, Portorož and Brda.
  • Pannonian Slovenia: vineyards, gentle hills and villages in the east, around Ptuj and Maribor.

The classics

  • The VršičpasFrom Kranjska Gora, more than 20 kilometers and about 870 meters of elevation gain to the country’s highest pass, over 24 numbered hairpin bends, partly paved. On the other side you descend to the Sočadal valley.
  • The Mangart saddle from Bovec: The highest road in Slovenia. A 52-kilometer route with over 1,600 meters of elevation gain, with tunnels at the end and views stretching as far as Italy.
  • From Bled to Bohinj via the Pokljuka72 kilometers and over 1,000 meters of elevation above the plateau between the two lakes. Bohinj is the quieter, wilder counterpart of Bled.
  • The Logar Valley and the Solčava Panoramic Road38 kilometers with over 1,000 meters of elevation gain through the Upper Savinja Valley, one of the country's best-kept secrets.
  • Brda, the Soča and Nova Gorica: a 40-kilometer round trip through the vineyards of Brda, the Tuscany of Slovenia, towards the Italian border.
  • From Ljubljana to Škofja Loka72 kilometers via Polhov Gradec, a nice day ride from the capital.

  • Bled of Bohinj: For the lakes, the Pokljuka and the Alps. Bohinj is quieter.

Mountain biking around Bovec and underground in Mežica

Bovec, in the Soča Valley, is Slovenia’s mountain biking mecca. Around the village there are about 395 kilometers of marked cycling and mountain biking trails, ranging from leisurely tours along the Soča River to challenging trails in the mountains. For racing cyclists, there are routes up to almost 100 kilometers, for example towards Vršič and Predelpas.

An off-the-beaten-path: the old lead and zinc mine beneath the Peca mountain near Mežica. You can explore the tunnels with a guide on a mountain bike (and even by kayak, where they are submerged underwater). Great for a relaxing day or when the weather is bad.

Spring (April and May) is a good time: the valleys are green, but there is still snow above, so the high passes may still be closed. From Schiphol you can fly directly to Ljubljana in less than two hours.

Bikepacking and gravel

A multi-day gravel or bikepacking trip is the perfect way to get to know the country: from Kranjska Gora via Vršič and the lakes to the wine regions and the coast. Read our story Why you want to go on a bikepacking trip in Slovenia. For those who want more: the Trans Dinarica begins in Slovenia and runs through the entire Balkans.

When are you leaving?

From May to September for the mountains; the high passes only open when the snow has melted, and in the spring there may still be snow above. Spring and autumn are ideal for the coast, Brda and the wine region in the east, when it is too cold in the mountains.

How do you get there?

Ljubljana is about 11 hours’ drive from Utrecht by car, via Germany and Austria (note: for the highways in Austria and Slovenia you need a vignette). You can fly to Ljubljana, or to Venice, Trieste or Klagenfurt and then continue by car.

This is how we calculate: We calculate distances and travel times starting from Utrecht. Our flights always depart from Schiphol, Rotterdam The Hague Airport or Eindhoven Airport.
