Cycling in the province of Granada
Have you ever thought about Granada as a cycling destination? Granada is a less well-known destination than, for example, Spanish regions like the Costa Blanca or the nearby Costa del Sol. The city is located 60 kilometers from the coast. Where coastal towns are often more touristy, you will notice that the atmosphere in Granada and its surroundings is more authentic. And the possibilities for cyclists are endless: Granada is a kind of hub where the most diverse landscapes are located around it. You can cycle towards the coast, test your climbing abilities towards the ski resort in the Sierra Nevada, or even cycle through desert landscape in the Geoparque Granada.
The city of Granada is also worth visiting; the city is famous for the Alhambra, the ancient palace and fortress, which is famous for its beautiful architecture and gardens, and its rich history. Additionally, visit the Albaicín, a historic Moorish quarter with narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and beautiful views of the city and the Sierra Nevada. Granada is also known for its vibrant atmosphere, tapas, and vibrant cultural life, including flamenco in the Sacromonte neighborhood.
Geoparque Granada is a UNESCO Geopark that extends over several municipalities in the province of Granada. It covers an enormous area of 4,722 km². The landscape consists of badlands, valleys, and highlands, with many geological and archaeological attractions. Among cyclists, this landscape is known for the famous gravel ultra ‘Badlands’. For the most characteristic area – that is, the real badlands – you have to be in the Gorafe Desert. It is amazing to be able to cycle through desert in Europe. Here you can really do it. Although on the gravel or mountain bike you discover the most beautiful trails, you can also ride a bike well in this area. The roads are well maintained and there are few motorists in this area. A good starting point is the village of Gorafe. If you are coming from Granada and don’t have a car? Then take the train to Guadix and start there. Your bike is allowed on the train.

The Sierra Nevada is a mountain range in southern Spain, in the Andalusia region. The name ‘Sierra Nevada’ literally means ‘snow-covered mountain range’ in Spanish. And that name fits well, because in winter the Sierra Nevada is a popular winter sports area. Even in summer there can still be snow on the highest peaks. And it is very high here; the Sierra Neveda contains more than 20 mountain peaks above 3,000 meters and you can find the highest peak of the Spanish mainland here; the Mulhacén, at 3,479 meters high.
Cycling over the highest paved road in Europe
In the Sierra Nevada lies the highest paved road in Europe; the Pico del Veleta is at an altitude of 3,396 meters! The climb to the top is 42 kilometers long with 2,770 meters of elevation gain and an average gradient of 6.5%. Please note that the last one and a half kilometers are gravel. It is a special experience to climb the Pico del Veleta; it is strenuous and the weather can change quickly. However, the view from the top is fantastic. Plan your cycling trip in the summer if you want to climb this route; from autumn until around the end of June there is a lot of snow on the summit, the last part of the route will then be impassable.
Sander had already cycled in the Sierra Nevada. He visited Team Visma | Lease a Bike, which was there at the time at a high level. Read more about his experience here.
On the southwest side of the city of Granada, the area is once again completely different. No matter how dry the desert soil – just a ‘small’ piece further on – this side of Granada is immediately covered with green fields and fields. It still feels a bit like Northern France at first, but soon the peaks of the surrounding mountain ranges become visible and you cycle through a beautiful area. Cycle to Pantano de los Bermejales for breathtaking views over a large lake, with the peaks of, among others, La Maroma (the highest peak of the Sierra de Tejeda) in the background. In this area, you would like to ride on the dunes; this way you discover the most beautiful places and there are plenty of opportunities for gravel routes. Many unpaved roads are occasionally used for car traffic and are therefore not too technical. On route planners like Komoot you will find numerous beautiful gravel routes!
The best time for a cycling holiday in Granada
Spring (March to May): In spring, temperatures range between 12°C and 20°C. The region comes alive with flowers and flowering fruit trees, although there will still be snow on the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. There are an average of 8 to 12 rainy days per month, but there are also 12 to 14 sunny days, especially in May, when it starts to get warmer.
Summer (June to August): The summers in Granada are hot, with temperatures often reaching above 30°C or higher in the lowlands, but in the mountains it remains slightly cooler. The Sierra Nevada provides a good base for escaping the heat. It rarely rains in the summer, with an average of 4 rainy days per month and 20 to 25 very sunny days. Head out early in the summer months, and enjoy a siesta during the hottest part of the day – just like the Spaniards do.
Autumn (September to November): Autumn in Granada is a beautiful season, with temperatures between 15°C and 22°C. The forests turn a beautiful orange color during this time. The region is less crowded than in the summer, which makes it ideal for bike tours through the Geopark or the Sierra Nevada. There are an average of 9 to 12 rainy days per month, with about 10 to 12 sunny days, especially in September and October.
Winter (December to February): The winter in Granada is mild in the lowlands, with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 14°C. During this period, you can still cycle perfectly here. In the Sierra Nevada, it can be considerably colder and snow may fall. The road to the ski slopes is well passable because large buses also run here – but beware of slippery roads after rain. The rainfall is highest in these months, with an average of 17 rainy days per month, but it is usually short, light showers and the rest of the day is sunny.
Your Cycling base
Around Granada you can choose between the city, the mountains and the villages of the Alpujarras:
- Granada: with the Alhambra and tapas, and the climb to the Sierra Nevada from the city.
- Monachil or Pradollano: higher up in the mountains, for those who want to train at altitude.
- Lanjarón or the Alpujarras: on the south side of the Sierra Nevada, with white villages and quiet mountain roads.
Travel tips
Best Travel Time: Avoid the summer months when you don’t want to venture into the middle of the tourist and hot season. The spring and autumn are much more appealing for cyclists. It’s then perfect weather for cycling and the days are long, allowing you to be on the road all day. You can also cycle well around Granada in winter, but be aware that the Pico del Veleto is not accessible during this period due to the snow. However, you can cycle to the ski resort.
Bike rental: There are various options for bike rental in and around Granada. For example, rent a Giant or Trek race bike or gravel bike at Rent A Bici (a Dutch company). Your bike will be delivered to your hotel or accommodation; so convenient!
