The course of the Tour of Spain It was announced yesterday and it promises to be another great round. Not only with the start in The Netherlands, Where you can draw enough inspiration for your next micro adventure, but you can also enjoy the stages in Spain. The route ends with 9 uphill stages in La Vuelta 2022 at best. Should you get bored this coming summer, a cycling holiday along the La Vuelta trail might be an idea. We’ve put the climbs in order for you. You can then add them to your bucket list right away! So enjoy 9 uphill finishes in Spain in La Vuelta 2022!

Pico Jano

The first challenge that the riders will face in 2022 is the ascent of the Pico Jano in Cantabria. It seems logical that this climb is news: the last 4 kilometers of this goat trail must be the most difficult part of the entire race. still paved This is not an easy task, as the profile shows. The climb is not one of extreme length, but between kilometers three and four you are well above 9%. After a stretch of flat, the surprise is at 600 meters before the finish line. With almost 15 percent elevation gain, the riders, but also you as a cyclist, will need good legs. A nice

Colláu Fancuaya

This climb is unknown to most cyclists. Logical, because this climb was not included in the Vuelta route before. In this stage, the ascent is quite long, but the reward is the most important thing. This is another case of a Vuelta climb that just keeps going up. The steeper, the better. It is a real goat trail that averages 10% ascents in the final kilometers, with a peak of 13%. Painful. This one deserves to be included in the list of monster climbs in the region again: Asturias.

Les Praeres

We’ll stay in Asturias for a while, with the finish at the top of Les Praeres. With a length of almost five kilometers and an average of a staggering 13.5(!)% Les Praeres de Nava is a monster by any measure. And don’t forget that some sections are over 20% meters high. Not normal, especially for a final climb.

Peñas Blancas

With over 16 kilometers at an average of 6.2%, the ‘steep white cliff’ is a nice finale to the twelfth stage in Andalusia. The first part is mostly irregular, with spikes up to 14%, but with only eight kilometers to go it all gets a bit more draggy. Although. The average is still well above 7% and there are some tricky peaks of 10%+. Here the pros will be struggling with each other. For amateurs like us, it will mostly be a blessing to get to the top once. According to Cyclingcols, the climb is comparable to the The Crans-Montana climb, which we did ourselves last summer. It was quite a hard climb.

Sierra La Pandera

This climb, further west in Andalusia, is not unknown to the pros. In 2017 this climb was already steeper in one stage. Now it has been included again and, depending on which route you take, it is a difficult climb. No matter how you turn it around, you drive up 8% kilometers on average, with the steepest kilometer at 13.5%. With only 6 kilometers left, you really can’t get below 10%, except for the last kilometer. This will be hard work, because you’re going up to an altitude of 1832 meters, between the rocks. So there’s little shelter. You can never have too much drink with you, and especially in the summer it’s advisable to apply sun cream. But beware: in winter it can just as easily snow lie down!

Sierra Nevada

We are now climbing to the ski resort of Sierra Nevada. Once upon a time a World Championships in skiing were held there, but that didn’t happen for a good reason: there was no snow. That was back in the days when fake snow wasn’t cool and people prayed a lot and had a real procession (really happened) I couldn’t save the World Cup anymore. It turned out to be ‘nada, enchilada’. Unfortunately, it was peanut butter.

It’s nice that you can cycle here in the summer. However, it’s nice: the climb is one of the longest types. 30 kilometers long, about 6% on average, and you climb up to over 2500 meters. The last five kilometers are not under 7%, and between kilometer twelve and six you still have to put up with some hard work. Not an easy climb, and combined with the altitude of the finish, this is a real exhausting slog. However, a big advantage: you have a view of the sea!

Alto del Piornal

Another beautiful goat trail, this time in Extremadura. The length of this climb makes all the difference; it’s not very steep here. With over 16 kilometers of average grade of 5%, this will be tough on the riders. If you also consider the surroundings, it will be a tough climb in the summer. As an amateur, you’ll be happy to be just under a kilometer from the top; that’s where the climb really eases off. If you go up in the summer: bring plenty of water, because here too you’ll be riding in the open plains in the blazing sun.

Puerto de Cotos – Navacerrada

The climb itself won’t instill much fear. 16 kilometers long, 4.2%, a piece of cake for the average pro. But in this Vuelta 2022 there is also some ‘hill work’ in the kilometers leading up to the climb, so don’t forget to turn on the TV for this stage! As a cycling tourist, the climb to this ski resort near Madrid is a nice training climb. Not too steep, not too difficult. However, the trick lies in the last seven kilometers, if the gradient doesn’t reach 6.5%. The last five kilometers are even 7.5% on average! That’s a tough climb!
