Kleine akkers, houtwallen, beekjes en boerderijen, verbonden door honderden kilometers zandweg, karrenspoor en klinkerpad. &#8220;Hier lijkt het gravel te zijn ontstaan&#8221;, zeggen ze bij Outdoor Achterhoek zelf, en wie er eenmaal heeft gereden, gaat dat niet tegenspreken. Het is een van de beste gravelgebieden van Nederland, op anderhalf uur rijden van de Randstad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vroeger was de Achterhoek voor veel Randstedelingen echt de ACHTERhoek: ver weg, achter de IJssel, alleen als het moest. Op de fiets draait dat beeld volledig om. Lange witte stroken zonder huis, mens of dier in zicht. Achter elke bocht een ander uitzicht. Of, zoals Achterhoek Toerisme het zegt: het landschap is geen decor, maar een speeltuin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waarom fietsen in de Achterhoek?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Coulisselandschap.<\/strong> Paden die rij na rij worden omzoomd door bomen en houtwallen. Elke paar honderd meter verandert het beeld, en dat maakt ook een vlakke rit nooit saai.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Onverhard waar je maar kijkt.<\/strong> Oude tractorpaden, brede zandwegen, smalle kerkepaden die bijna allemaal een eigen naam hebben, en wat local Andrea &#8220;Gucci gravel&#8221; noemt: gravel zo strak dat het bijna asfalt lijkt. Op de meeste routes is 40 tot 50 procent onverhard.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Meer glooiing dan je denkt.<\/strong> Geen bergen, maar rond Montferland, Winterswijk en Elten net over de grens klim je wel degelijk. Bij Elten ligt zelfs een onverhard klimmetje dat je uit meerdere richtingen kunt aanrijden.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Kastelen en landgoederen.<\/strong> Rond Vorden, het dorp van de acht kastelen, Ruurlo en Hackfort rijd je van landgoed naar landgoed. En in de gemeente Bronckhorst ligt het kleinste stadje van Nederland: Bronckhorst, met zo&#8217;n negentig inwoners.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Rust.<\/strong> Je komt weinig andere gravelaars tegen. Een verdwaalde local, een ouder stel op de e-bike, koeien, en op de route rond Gendringen zelfs alpaca&#8217;s, wallaby&#8217;s en hangbuikzwijnen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">De Strade Bianche Achterhoek<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De bijnaam zegt genoeg. Tussen Hengelo (Gelderland), Zelhem, Lochem, Almen en Laren liggen zoveel lange witte stroken dat de streek liefkozend de Strade Bianche Achterhoek wordt genoemd. Er is ook een gelijknamig evenement, en Outdoor Achterhoek heeft er routes van 70 en 101 kilometer van. Wij reden er een ronde van 56 kilometer vanuit Hengelo: eerst een paar honderd meter asfalt, en dan de velden in. Lees het in <a href=\"\/verhalen\/gravelroute-in-gelderland-strade-bianche-achterhoek\">Verkenning van de Strade Bianche Achterhoek<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waar rijd je?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Berkelland en Ruurlo.<\/strong> Vanuit Hengelo via &#8217;t Zelle, Ruurlo, Beltrum, Neede en Geesteren, langs de rivier de Berkel en door het gele koolzaad. Hier pak je ook een stuk van de Slinge MTB-route mee. Naar het noorden rijd je via de bossen van Velhorst naar Almen: 55 kilometer, perfect voor twee uur plezier.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Rond Zelhem.<\/strong> Niet het mooiste dorp, wel heel veel mooi gravel. Onze route van bijna 75 kilometer is goed voor drie tot vier uur.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Ulft en de Oude IJssel.<\/strong> Tegen de Duitse grens. Binnen twee kilometer na het dorp zit je al op de bospaden, en het stuk rond Vennebuiten voelt als buitenland. Zie <a href=\"\/gravel\/gravelroute-rondom-ulft\">Gravelroute rondom Ulft<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Montferland.<\/strong> Het heuvelachtigste stuk van de Achterhoek, rond Zeddam en &#8216;s-Heerenberg. Outdoor Achterhoek heeft hier gravelroutes van 44 tot 71 kilometer.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Winterswijk en Aalten.<\/strong> Het oosten, met het mooiste coulisselandschap en een van de dichtste knooppuntennetwerken van Nederland.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Routes van Outdoor Achterhoek<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Op <a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorachterhoek.nl\/gravelroutes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outdoorachterhoek.nl<\/a> vind je zo&#8217;n dertig gravelroutes met GPX-download, samengesteld door lokale gravelaars. Van korte rondjes tot de Gravelbikepacktour van 244 kilometer langs Winterswijk, Ruurlo, Neede, Vorden, Terborg, Lochem en Zelhem. De bewegwijzerde MTB-routes, zoals die van Zieuwent, Groenlo en Winterswijk, hebben geen singletracks en zijn ook prima met de gravelbike te rijden. De Achterhoek bouwt aan een MTB-netwerk van 300 kilometer, en de route bij Lochem werd al eens verkozen tot beste MTB-route van Nederland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Op de racefiets is de Achterhoek net zo mooi: rustige asfaltweggetjes, slingerend langs erven en landgoederen, waarop je zo 70 tot 90 kilometer rijdt. De rondroute &#8220;Ode aan het landschap&#8221; laat in 360 kilometer het hele landschap zien. Hij is bewegwijzerd, je kunt hem in etappes rijden, en hij was in 2026 finalist voor <a href=\"\/verhalen\/nederland\/luxemburg-lyon-fietsroute-van-het-jaar-2026\">Fietsroute van het Jaar<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">De Gravelcode<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Niet elk onverhard pad is een fietspad, ook al zegt je GPS soms iets anders. Outdoor Achterhoek vraagt daarom om drie dingen: <strong>Be nice, say hi<\/strong> (en hier zeg je &#8220;moi&#8221;), <strong>enjoy nature<\/strong> (neem je bananenschil mee naar huis) en <strong>stay on track<\/strong>. Tussen 15 maart en 15 juli is het broedseizoen: blijf dan extra goed op de paden. Wie de <a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorachterhoek.nl\/Gravelcode\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gravelcode<\/a> ondertekent, krijgt toegang tot extra legale routes van routemeester Gijs Bruinsma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading cd-tot-2026-11-08\">EK Veldrijden in Zeddam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"cd-tot-2026-11-08 wp-block-paragraph\">Op 7 en 8 november 2026 wordt in Zeddam, in Montferland, het EK Veldrijden verreden. Een mooi excuus om die week zelf de heuvels rond Zeddam in te duiken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Onderweg: koffie, lunch en pannenkoeken<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pannenkoeken bij De Heikamp in Ruurlo, pal aan de MTB-route.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Lunch of borrel bij Het Wapen van Heeckeren, als je richting het zuiden rijdt.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>IJs bij Langeler in Hengelo.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Koffie en stevige broodjes bij Caf\u00e9 Motto in Gendringen.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Warme chocolademelk na een natte rit bij De Heeren van Wolfersveen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En als het met bakken uit de lucht komt: kastelen, musea en proeverijen bij lokale brouwers en wijnboeren. Een ochtendrit van 50 kilometer, &#8217;s middags een brouwerij, en &#8217;s avonds een lokaal biertje op een terras in Bredevoort of Dinxperlo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gravelroutes in de Achterhoek<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De Achterhoek is een van de beste gravelstreken van Nederland: zandwegen, lanen en coulisselandschap tot aan de Duitse grens. Na veel regen kunnen zandwegen zacht zijn, dus kies dan liever een route met wat meer bospad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hoe kom je er?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Met de trein naar Winterswijk, Lochem, Ruurlo of Doetinchem, of met de auto in anderhalf uur vanuit de Randstad. Er zijn ook hotel-naar-hotel-arrangementen met bagagevervoer.
