At about three hours\u2019 drive from the Netherlands, there are wooded hills, deep valleys, reservoirs, and climbs up to over 800 meters, with Winterberg as the focal point. Sauerland Tourism calls the region a paradise for road cyclists, and that\u2019s not an exaggeration: nowhere is it so easy to rack up altitude in peaceful roads as close to home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we first started cycling, it surprised us that the Sauerland is so little mentioned. Everyone talks about the Ardennes and Limburg, but just a little further across the border you\u2019ll find at least as many climbs, and much less traffic. It\u2019s an ideal destination for a long weekend, a training week in spring, or a first introduction to \u2018real\u2019 high-altitude hiking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sauerland in brief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sauerland Tourism calls the Sauerland \u2018Germany's inspiring outdoor region\u2019, and the figures show why:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Big.<\/strong> With more than 5,000 square kilometers, it is the largest contiguous holiday area north of the Main. It is located in the districts of Olpe, M\u00e4rkischer Kreis, Hochsauerlandkreis and Soest in North Rhine-Westphalia, plus the Hessische municipalities of Willingen and Diemelsee.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Green.<\/strong> Three nature parks, five large and dozens of small lakes, and everywhere there is forest. Underground there are stalactite caves and old mines that you can visit.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Popular.<\/strong> Every year, more than 2.5 million visitors come, which represents almost 8 million overnight stays. In the winter, with over 130 ski lifts, it is the largest winter sports area north of the Alps.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>My own.<\/strong> The name dates back to the Middle Ages and probably meant \u2018the southern land\u2019, as seen from Dortmund, Soest and M\u00fcnster. The Sauerl\u00e4nder Platt is a distinct Low German language, and many words are still heard today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For cyclists, this means above all: plenty of space, little traffic, and an endless choice of roads through a green mountain plateau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why cycle in the Sauerland?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Heights meters close to home.<\/strong> The Kahler Asten is 842 meters high and is one of the highest peaks in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Rothaarkam has passages that almost feel like an alpine experience.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Quiet roads.<\/strong> The Sauerland is sparsely populated and the asphalt is generally good. You drive for hours on country roads through the forests.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Climbing in all sizes.<\/strong> No twenty-kilometer climbs, but a lot of climbing from two to ten kilometers, which follow one another quickly. A 100-kilometer ride here easily yields 1,500 to 2,000 meters of elevation gain.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Locks and dams.<\/strong> In the valleys there are water reservoirs such as the Hennesee, the Sorpesee, the Biggesee and the M\u00f6hnesee. You can simply cycle over many of the dams (\u2018Sperren\u2019).<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>An official route platform.<\/strong> On the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sauerland-radwelt.de\/de\/rennrad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sauerland Radwelt<\/a> There are more than one hundred race bike routes with GPS tracking, from short evening rides to long distances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The landscape: mountains, forests and water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sauerland is a mid-mountain range. The roads wind through dense coniferous forests and along open meadows, then climb up to a viewpoint over the hills. Because the hills are so close together, there are many valleys, and in many of those valleys there is a reservoir. That gives the rides something extra: after a long climb through the forest, you suddenly ride over the top of a dam, with the water on both sides. At the Hennesee, the Sorpesee, and the Biggetalsperre, this is a regular part of the most beautiful routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the winter, the Sauerland is a ski resort, and that says enough about the climate above ground. At the peaks, it\u2019s a few degrees colder than in the valley, and it can also be chilly there in the summer. So always bring a wind jacket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The three longest bicycle routes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who really want to go the distance, these are the three longest race bike routes of the Sauerland Radwelt. All three are circular routes, and you can find them with maps, elevation profiles, and GPX downloads in our routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/en\/routes\/the-border-round\/\">The Grenzlandrunde<\/a><\/strong> (154.5 km, 2,405 altitude meters): a tough round trip from Winterberg along the border with Hesse, with plenty of places to stop along the way. The highest point is at 675 meters.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/en\/routes\/rtf-hochsauerland-classic\/\">RTF classic Hochsauerland<\/a><\/strong> (146.5 km, 1,939 meters of elevation gain): the route of the classic tour through the Hochsauerland. It starts in Eslohe and climbs to 838 meters, near the Kahler Asten.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/en\/routes\/newrade-schmallenberg\/\">Neuenrade \u2013 Schmallenberg<\/a><\/strong> (143.8 km, 1,489 vertical meters): a long tour from Neuenrade in the west of the Sauerland, through varied landscapes and with plenty of opportunities for a coffee break.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less long, but just as beautiful: the Trans-Rothaar (138.6 km, 2,175 meters of elevation gain) over the Rothaarka Valley, Berge &amp; Wasser (143.3 km) along the mountains and the reservoirs, and the Sauerland Rundfahrt (134.4 km). If you want to take it slow, the M\u00f6hnesee Loop (57 km, 330 meters of elevation gain) is a nice introduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A long weekend in the Sauerland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what a long weekend looks like if you go out from Winterberg:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Friday<\/strong>Driving in the morning, arriving in the afternoon, and taking a short walk to stretch the legs, for example to Kahler Asten and back.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Saturday<\/strong>The big day. Ride the Grenzlandrunde, or choose a shorter variant of 90 to 100 kilometers over the Rothaarkam if you still need to get used to the climbs.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Sunday<\/strong>: a quieter ride along the reservoirs, with a stop at the Hennesee or the Sorpesee, and then back home on time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In three days, you\u2019ll have covered about 250 kilometers and 4,000 meters of elevation gain, without having to take a day off for the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Base of operations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Winterberg<\/strong>: The most famous village, with many hotels and most routes close to the door. From Winterberg you can go in all directions, even for a slightly flatter recovery ride. The tourism association Ferienwelt Winterberg is increasingly focusing on cyclists.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Eslohe<\/strong>: a quiet village in the middle of the Sauerland, with routes to all directions.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>On the Hennesee near Meschede<\/strong>In the morning we climb the mountains, in the afternoon we take a refreshing swim in the reservoir. For us, perhaps, this is the ideal place.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Schmallenberg and Willingen<\/strong>: good alternatives, close to the Rothaarkam and the highest peaks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you stay, look for the Bett+Bike label: these addresses have a closed bicycle parking area, tools, and a breakfast that suits a long journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sauerland has a vibrant cycling culture, with tours (RTFs) from spring to autumn, road marathons and even Bundesliga matches. Highlights are the Sauerlandrundfahrt, a multi-day race in September, and the tours of the local clubs, such as the RTF of TV R\u00f6nkhausen in June. The region is also home to the professional team REMBE rad-net. The current calendar is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sauerland-radwelt.de\/de\/rennrad\/rennrad-events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sauerland Radwelt<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Also for gravel and mountain bikes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sauerland is not just for the mountain bike. Winterberg has one of the most famous bike parks in Germany and hundreds of kilometers of forest trails, and there are also separate routes for gravel. In spring and autumn, it can still be cold at the top, and after rain the wooded slopes are sometimes wet and slippery. Summer is ideal: warm in the valley, cool on top, and afterwards a swim in one of the reservoirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you get there?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By car, you can get to Winterberg in about three hours, via Arnhem or Venlo and the Ruhr area. By train, you can travel to Winterberg or Brilon, with a stopover in Germany.
