That makes it one of the best gravel terrains in Europe, although few cyclists know that. It\u2019s peaceful, the nature is close everywhere, and in the summer it hardly gets dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why cycle in Finland?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The sea area<\/strong>: tours on gravel roads past lakes and through forests, with a sauna nearby everywhere.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>A growing gravel scene<\/strong>: with Lahti as the center, where the FNLD GRVL and Falling Leaves Lahti races are held.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>The \u00c5land Islands<\/strong>: an archipelago between Finland and Sweden with flat, quiet roads and ferry boats. Perfect for a longer trip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gravel and bikepacking routes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bikeland, the Finnish knowledge center for cycling tourism, has launched a series of route networks for gravel and bikepacking. A few examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Saimaa by Cycle<\/strong>According to Bikeland, it is the most versatile gravel network in Finland, around the large Saimaameer in the east, with overnight stays and food by the water.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Lake District by Cycle<\/strong>: three bikepacking loops through central Finland, with many short hills between the lakes.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>HelsinkiNorth by Cycle<\/strong>: a network north of Helsinki, through the forests of the Nuuksio National Park and along river valleys. Handy if you have just landed.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>South by Cycle<\/strong>: Biking along the southern coast, with wooden villages and the shoring coast.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Arctic by Cycle<\/strong>: about 2,000 kilometers of routes in Lapland, for those who really want to experience the wilderness.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Posio<\/strong>: gravel and bikepacking in East Lapland, near the Arctic Circle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Finland, just like in Sweden, you can camp almost anywhere in nature thanks to the right of all people to camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overnight stays and practicality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can find one almost everywhere in Finland. <em>cottage<\/em>: A summer cottage by a lake, often with its own sauna. Perfect as a base for a few days gravel camping. Bring good mosquito repellent in summer, especially in the forests and the north. Ideal for a race bike or a relaxing multi-day trip.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Lapland<\/strong>For those who really want to experience the wilderness, with over 2,000 kilometers of routes and the midnight sun in June and July.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finland is well organized and safe. Payments are made with the card everywhere, and almost every cottage has a sauna: after a long day on the gravel roads, there\u2019s no better way to unwind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you get there?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fly to Helsinki; by train you are in Lahti in an hour and in a few hours in the archipelago. By car, you can take the ferry from Travem\u00fcnde to Helsinki, or via Sweden and the boat from Stockholm to Turku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three routes to start with<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gravel around Lahti<\/strong>: an hour from Helsinki, with gravel roads through forests and past lakes, and the starting point of the most famous Finnish grave-painting events.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>A tour of the \u00c5land Islands<\/strong>: flat, quiet and with small ferry boats between the islands. Ideal for a relaxing multi-day trip, even on a mountain bike.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Saimaa by Cycle<\/strong>: the gravel network around Finland's largest lake, with overnight stays by the water and a sauna every evening.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For whom is Finland?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finland is for cyclists who seek silence. The gravel roads are wide and well-maintained, the traffic is minimal, and nature begins everywhere at the edge of the village. Gravel riders and bikepackers are best suited to this area. Come in the summer for the long days, or in mid-September for the autumn colors of the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When are you leaving?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">June to September. Midsummer is magical; August is the warmest month.
