The Hautes-Alpes department is a true paradise for cyclists. Here we find some of the most challenging and scenic routes you can imagine. Cycling in the French Alps is a treat and this region is the icing on the cake. One of the most striking features of this area are the historic mountain villages that adorn the hills. Cyclists can enjoy picturesque villages such as Brian\u00e7on<\/a>, the highest town in Europe, and Embrun, surrounded by crystal-clear lakes and majestic mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sleep<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We stayed in the Grand Hotel in Saint-Chauffrey<\/a>, a village that lives off winter sports in winter, and is increasingly focusing on cyclists in summer. Besides its great restaurant and spa, the hotel offers facilities for guarded bike storage. So there is no surprise to see a breakfast guest in cycling clothes.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Galibier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most famous climbs in Hautes-Alpes is the Col du Galibier. This mythical mountain pass is high on the wish list of many a cyclist. With its altitude of 2,642 metres and breathtaking views, climbing the Galibier<\/a> an unforgettable experience. The road winds through alpine meadows and offers ever-changing vistas the higher you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As one of the most visited and ridden cols in the Tour de France, the Lautaret is steeped in legends and stories. Saint-Chaffrey borders the start of the Col du Granon. The Granon may not be as well known as some other legendary cols, but that does not make its appeal any less strong. In 2022, the Granon was the stage on which Jonas Vingeraard managed to seal victory over Tadej Pogacar, and thus the Tour<\/a> managed to win. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Granon is known for being quiet and less frequented, making it a favourite for cyclists looking for a more peaceful and intimate experience. With its winding road climbing up through dense forests, the Granon offers a different perspective on Alpine cycling. As you move uphill in solitude and silence, you can completely surrender and enjoy the magic of nature around you. Vall\u00e9e des Belleville: a hidden treasure for cyclists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Located in the heart of the French Alps, the Vall\u00e9e des Belleville may be less known to the general cycling public, but it represents a hidden treasure for cyclists. This valley is surrounded by some of the most famous ski resorts, such as Les Menuires and Val Thorens, but in the summer months it reveals a different, less discovered side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We stayed in Les Menuires<\/a> at the hotel Lodji<\/a>, a sophisticated place with luxurious rooms, an extensive spa with views of the surrounding cols and incredibly good cuisine. Around the corner is the crown jewel of this valley, the Col de la Madeleine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Col de la Madeleine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With its nearly 20 kilometres of climbing and an average gradient of about 8%, it is a challenge that will appeal to both experienced and adventurous cyclists. Along the way, you will be rewarded with pristine nature, babbling brooks and the tranquillity of mountain scenery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who think there is only road activity in the valley are wrong. The (electric) MTB is increasingly making its entry into the valley. Led by local legend and guide, R\u00e9mi Cachera and Didier Collomb, we head towards Val Thorens. After climbing the Tougn\u00e8te overlooking the Col de la Loze (now famous from the Tour de France 2023), we descend to Chez P\u00e9p\u00e9 Nicolas<\/a> at 1400 metres altitude. Where we eat salmon from the lakes surrounding Val Thorens. The subsequent descent is challenging and breathtaking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
