Vaak wordt deze bestemming en de benaming door elkaar gebruikt. Voor de inwoners van het Britse en Ierse eiland kan het nogal gevoelig liggen, welke naam je noemt. Voor ons buitenstaanders is dat vaak wat minder ernstig. Wat buiten kijf staat is de prachtige fietsbestemming die Engeland is. Hier zijn 10 prachtige racefiets en gravelroutes in Engeland waar zowel wielrenners als gravelbikers zich in kunnen vastbijten. De fietsroutes zijn elk meer dan 100 kilometer lengte met een mooi aantal hoogtemeters. Deze routes starten en eindigen bij een fijn caf\u00e9, de meeste cafe&#8217;s zijn fietsvriendelijk en ze hebben allemaal prachtige hoogtepunten langs de weg. Wij hebben er per route ook nog een mooie lunchtip bij gedaan. Geniet van deze 10 prachtige routes in Engeland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Peak District Circuit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Als je denkt aan fietsen in Engeland, dan zijn er een aantal hotspots die gelijk naar boven komen. The <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/verhalen\/peak-hunting-the-peak-district\">Peak District<\/a> is misschien wel het meest populair. Met prachtige klimmen met nog mooiere namen als &#8216;Mam Tor&#8217; en &#8216;Snake Pass&#8217; heb je een prachtige fietsdag voor de boeg. Begin jouw route in het leuke plaatsje Bakewell (bekend van de taart) bij <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summat.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">SUMMAT Caf\u00e9<\/a>, waar je je fiets ook bij terugkomst goed kwijt kunt en waar de innerlijke mens goed wordt bediend. Onderweg rij je langs Chatsworth House en tackel je de klimmetjes van Mam Tor, Snake Pass en nog veel meer. Wil je onderweg stoppen voor lunch? Dat kan heel erg goed in Hathersage, waar bijvoorbeeld Bank House een zeer goede kaart heeft. Wil je iets meer &#8217;typical English&#8217;, ga dan naar Cintra&#8217;s Tea Room. Lake District Epic Loop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Samen met het Peak District en de Yorkshire Dales is het Lake District een van de mooiere plekken in Engeland om te gaan fietsen. Ook hier zal de gemiddelde klimmer niet teleurgesteld worden. Windermere en Kirkstone Pass behoren bij de Engelse klassiekers. Begin je route in Ambleside, bijvoorbeeld bij <a href=\"https:\/\/www.copper-pot.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Copper Pot Caf\u00e9<\/a> met een heerlijke menukaart, waar je ook bij terugkomst nog even kunt genieten. Let wel even op dat zij pas vanaf 09:30 open zijn. Daarna wacht het stevige klimwerk en dit zijn venijnige Engelse klimmetjes. Maar de haast dramatische uitzichten zijn echt ge-wel-dig. Wil je ondertussen stoppen voor lunch of een snelle bite? Keswick een typisch Lake District stadje op onze route heeft een aantal prima stops (we hebben ze getagd. Kijk ook eens bij <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merienda.co.uk\/dining\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Merienda<\/a>, voor een goede lunch). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.komoot.com\/nl-nl\/tour\/1329725010\/embed?gallery=1&#038;profile=1&#038;share_token=a0V8JW3q9MDcgeKd9nfijcMpvm4XCe4mT59gdIY5QBgf31amyP\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Yorkshire Dales Grand Tour<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2019 was <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/verhalen\/yorkshire-meer-dan-harrogate-alleen\">Yorkshire<\/a> een en al fietsen. Het WK 2019 was een mooie inkijk in het typische Yorkshire fietslandschap. Ook al eerder, in de Tour de France van 2014 en in de Tour de Yorkshire kon je op beeld genieten van alle pracht van dit graafschap. In Yorkshire is alles wat groter, tenminste als we local legend James Martin mogen geloven. Yorkshire portions zijn bovengemiddeld (en bovengemiddeld vet). Deze route neemt je mee via Buttertubs, ook al zo een prachtige klim en je komt langs het schitterende Ribblehead Viaduct.  Onze route begint in Skipton, bij <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theclubhousecc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clubhouse Cycles &amp; Coffee<\/a>. Kan het beter? Het is een uitdagend rondje dus als je wilt stoppen voor lunch, dan kun je bijvoorbeeld in Hawes zo aanschuiven bij The Wenleasdale Pantry. Engelse kneuterigheid ten top, maar oh zo lekker. South Downs Coastal Challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ook in het zuiden van Engeland kun je prachtig fietsen. Tijdens de Olympische Spelen van Londen was Box Hill en de regio erom heen een mooie inspiratie om in Engeland te gaan fietsen. Zwift en het &#8216;London Circuit&#8217; hielpen daar natuurlijk ook bij. Maar nog verder in het zuiden, bij Brighton langs de kust kun je de prachtige witte kliffen en dramatische kustlijn goed in je opnemen. Wij hebben een (lange) route vanaf Brighton gelegd, die via de &#8216;Seven Sisters Cliffs&#8217; en het Arundel Castle de meeste hoogtepunten meepakt. Eastbourne is een mooie stop voor koffie dan wel lunch, hoewel je bij terugkomst waarschijnlijk heel lang wil eten! Onze route begint bij <a href=\"https:\/\/porteur.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Porteur<\/a> in Hove (dat aan Brighton vast ligt). Meer informatie over het fietsen van de South Downs Way (een alternatief op onze route) vind je <a href=\"https:\/\/southdownsway.org\/activities\/cycling\/\">hier<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.komoot.com\/nl-nl\/tour\/1329740392\/embed?gallery=1&#038;profile=1&#038;share_token=a1i5c54tMbF6Duy0eF7h74yczZzgVqZBoMWs0oIcW0Z8w125AE\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Cornwall&#8217;s North Coast Adventure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cornwall is &#8216;het andere Engeland&#8217;. De meest westelijke punt van Engeland wordt gekenmerkt door een ander landschap dan andere delen. Cornwall is ook trots op de eigen historie. Je zou het ergens kunnen vergelijken met de provincie Friesland. Ook hier heeft men een eigen taal, het Cornish, dat een tijdje uitgestorven was maar weer nieuw leven wordt ingeblazen. Het landschap is heel ruig. <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/verhalen\/lejog-is-een-uitdaging-als-geen-ander\">Land&#8217;s End<\/a> is misschien wel de bekendste &#8216;Cornish Highlight&#8217;. Cornwall is ook waar je de geboorteplaats van Koning Arthur kunt vinden, bij Tintagel, dat toevallig ook op onze route ligt. De Koning Arthur legende leeft hier echt. Onze route begint in Padstow. Voor de kijkers van 24kitchen is dit &#8216;Rick Stein country&#8217;. De bekende Engelse chef komt hier vandaan en bij <a href=\"https:\/\/rickstein.com\/restaurants\/rick-steins-cafe\/?utm_source=gmb&amp;utm_id=cafe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Rick Stein&#8217;s caf\u00e9<\/a> kun je fantastisch eten. De route neemt je mee via Tintagel en de Bude Sea Pool naar St Nectan&#8217;s Glen. Dit is typisch de noordkust van Cornwall. Stop in Bude bij <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electricbakery.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Electric Bakery<\/a> voor een take-away lunch. Of zoek ergens de heerlijke oesters of andere visspecialiteiten waar de regio bekend om staat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.komoot.com\/nl-nl\/tour\/1331253718\/embed?gallery=1&#038;profile=1&#038;share_token=aCGlkar8BidXJ8ng7rcYzxwQU16G8n7djjIXSD2G3FtAplPX49\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Hadrian&#8217;s Wall Explorer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De muur van Hadrianus is wereldberoemd. De ruim 100 kilometer lange, historische muur die de geschiedenis van de Romeinen op het Engelse eiland goed weergeeft.  Keizer Hadrianus liet deze verdedingswal ten opzichte van het noorden bouwen door zijn legionairs. Van 117 tot 138 na Christus was men druk met het leggen van deze plaggenmuur. Nu vind je er prachtige historische plekken. De forten, Vindolanda, Sycamore Gap (waar de beroemde boom in september 2023 is omgewaaid) en het beeld van Hadrianus. Onze route begint in het prachtige Carlisle. Begin bijvoorbeeld bij The Espresso Hub of bij Brewed Awakenigs. Je trekt dan richting de muur van Hadrianus. Neem je goede fototoestel mee want dit is genieten. Lunchideeen? Stop in Hexham en duik een van de historische pubs in. Bij het Beaumont hotel vind je een mooie Sunday Roast, zo&#8217;n typische Engelse traditie. Maar voor de echte pub ga je naar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehearthexham.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">The Heart of Northumberland<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.komoot.com\/nl-nl\/tour\/1331265899\/embed?gallery=1&#038;profile=1&#038;share_token=azin71ROZjjc6rSTB1vXyKaQZc6VL6IOv6cNqocOp2tnEFuTSl\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. New Forest and Jurassic Coast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even een ander stukje Engeland. Hampshire is een vaak vergeten gedeelte. Bournemouth en omgeving is minder bekend dan bijvoorbeeld Southampton en Portsmouth een stukje naar het oosten. Bournemouth staat wel meer op de kaart vanwege de voetbalclub maar de Bournemouth Pier is een bekende hotspot. Toch duiken we met de fiets het achterland in, naar het mooie Beaulieu Palace, Hengistbury Head en Durdle Door. Onze route start in Lyndhurst, bij <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegreenwoodtreecafe.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Greenwood Cafe<\/a>. Niet te lang blijven plakken want je hebt flink wat kilometers voor de boeg. Lunchen is mooi in Swanage, waar de Salt Pig Too er bovenuit steekt. Anders is de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swanagepiertrust.com\/cafe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1859 Pier Caf\u00e9<\/a> een mooi alternatief, al is het maar vanwege de locatie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.komoot.com\/nl-nl\/tour\/1331273661\/embed?gallery=1&#038;profile=1&#038;share_token=alRTvaCPURaekfMppPuYVCX1pcWN5xHnA319QrasU42e1sHf46\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Norfolk Broads and Coastline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norwich ligt aan de lange afstandsroute <a href=\"https:\/\/en.eurovelo.com\/ev12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">EuroVelo 12<\/a>. Deze route loopt langs de gehele Noordzee (dus ook in Nederland) en je kunt er bijna zeker van zijn dat je een prachtige route krijgt voorgeschoteld. In de stad beginnen we bij <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebicycleshopcafe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">The Bicycle Shop Caf\u00e9<\/a>. Dit is misschien wel de meest vlakke route van allemaal. Met slechts 800 hoogtemeters over 160 kilometer, dan ben je bijna in Nederland! Anyway. Je gaat hier langs Blickling Estate op naar Holkham Beach, richting het noorden. Het Broads National Park biedt prachtige beelden en de zee is altijd iets om naar uit te kijken. Wells-next-the-Sea is de place to be voor verse Noordzee vis. <a href=\"https:\/\/plattensfishandchips.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Platten&#8217;s Fish And Chips<\/a> is de typische plek om te beginnen. Wil je iets meer een hippe lunch, dan is Well&#8217;s Deli jouw go-to place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.komoot.com\/nl-nl\/tour\/1331292689\/embed?gallery=1&#038;profile=1&#038;share_token=ag2Y2aFqfEFaAgM6OCimaiDUr0EBoPEbjPkizNKwYh0BCvSQKo\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Cotswolds Classic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kijk jij wel eens naar &#8216;Escape to the Country?&#8217; Dit BBC programma volgt koppels die het drukke stadsleven willen ontsnappen en een huis &#8216;in the countryside&#8217; willen kopen. Waar gaan ze vaak heen? Naar &#8216;The Cotswolds&#8217;. Hier vind je prachtige cottages, wegen met stenen muurtjes, bloemenhagen en mooie tearooms. Dat gezegd: hier wil je graag een keer een rondje maken. Vanuit Chipping Campden ga je direct een van de mooiste beklimmingen van Engeland op. Daarna is het dwars door het prachtige Cotswolds landschap richting Bourton-on-the-water, waar je graag een stop wil maken voor koffie of lunch. Dit is een toeristische highlight. The Mousetrap Inn op de weg naar Bourton is een prachtige stop. Het terras van de Rosetree House, daar wil je graag even stoppen. Begin je route bij <a href=\"https:\/\/bantamtea-rooms.co.uk\/menu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">The Bantam Tea Room<\/a> en als je terugkomt wil je hier niet meer weg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.komoot.com\/nl-nl\/tour\/1331313730\/embed?gallery=1&#038;profile=1&#038;share_token=agOezGhDjrPOseRWYjd0OciIp7odD9lJXLavAq3nC9rOyKqe8b\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Exmoor and Quantock Hills Challenge <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mocht je ooit wel eens het darten volgen, dan zal de naam Minehead je gelijk iets zeggen. Het lokale (voor sommige droevig uitziende) Minehead resort is regelmatig toneel van grote toernooien. Als je een toffe gravelroute zoekt in het Exmoor park, dan is dit een mooie uitdaging. Vanuit Minehead, waar je goed kunt beginnen vanaf <a href=\"https:\/\/cafecream.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Cafe Cream<\/a>, rij je gelijk de landerijen in. Dit is een uitdagende gravelroute. Let dus goed op, want je zult hier alle skills nodig hebben. Zeker ook omdat je een paar pittige klimmetjes gaat tegenkomen. Dunster Castle, Porlock Hill en andere mooie plekken vormen de hoogtepunten op deze route. Hungry for lunch? Zij doen heel veel mooie routes in, je raadt het al, het noorden van Engeland. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sommige routes zijn in meer afgelegen plekken. Daar vind je niet altijd een fietswinkel die open is, of een winkeltje waar je wat kunt kopen. Zorg dus dat je voldoende eten en drinken mee hebt voor een lange route.
