Those thinking of cycling in the Canary Islands are right Tenerife<\/a>, Gran Canaria<\/a> and (to a slightly lesser extent) Lanzarote<\/a> ahead. For years, these three destinations have been immensely popular with cyclists keen to escape the cold and rain of northern Europe for warm winter sunshine. Each island has its own peculiarities. Whereas Tenerife of course has 'El Teide', Lanzarote has been a favourite with triathletes for years. But one of the 'snowed under' islands is Fuerteventura. That means fewer people go here. So that's great, because it makes it an ideal cycling destination. We give you some more information on why you should go to Fuerteventura for cycling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mountains and moonscape<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cycling through the wrinkled, coffee-coloured mountains of Parque Rural de Betancuria in Fuerteventura's volcanic heart is like riding into the jaws of a giant crocodile. White stone road beacons snake along the cliffs, the road winding from the park's jagged peaks to the black sea cliffs and sparkling surf of the west coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fuerteventura is a stunning collection of geographical wonders. With every turn or climb, you see new natural splendour: you go from dark mountains to paradise-green cactus plantations and from desert dunes to rust-red cliffs. Finally, as always, you end up at an island: on the beach. Beautiful roads<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the big advantages when cycling in Spain is the quality of the roads. Whether you choose to adventure in Mallorca, on the Costa Blanca<\/a> or in the Basque Country<\/a>, the roads are of very good quality. The same goes for Fuerteventura, where you are occasionally presented with an almost tight billiard sheet. Enjoying it? Yes, of course! Add to that the wind, and you have the perfect mix for a unique cycling experience. Despite its windy reputation, Fuerteventura's wind is usually a gentle breeze that provides a pleasant coolness to the island, perfect for balancing on the slightly warmer days during a long lap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The route we chose, see at the bottom of this article, starts in sun-drenched Caleta de Fuste and traverses the beautiful interior. The route takes us to the red earth and a landscape reminiscent of Mars. We actually see new surprises everywhere; from exotic cacti to strange iron sculptures decorating the empty landscape. On the route, you will not only encounter beautiful nature. Most routes across the island offer a combination of the bizarre nature and authentic villages. On our route, you will also pass by Triquivijate. With its charming houses resembling giant pots of cr\u00e8me br\u00fbl\u00e9e, and the transition from a quiet coastal road to a dramatic descent towards the deep blue ocean, it is a beautiful sight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the way to the top, where monumental bronze statues of the island's ancient kings stand, we are treated to panoramic views stretching to the horizon, making every climb worthwhile. Besides the villages and nature, Fuerteventura's cuisine is also one to try out. It is, logically, rich in seafood and traditional Canarian dishes. Think 'papas arrugadas' with a hot pepper sauce, or prawns cooked in garlic and olive oil - the perfect post-ride snack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fuerteventura, with its raw beauty, wind, sun and unique landscapes, is waiting to be explored. The untamed nature, the wind whispering through the desert silence, and the endless roads unfolding in a spectrum of earthy colours make this island an unmissable destination for any passionate cyclist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
