For many cyclists, The climb of Alpe d\u2019Huez<\/strong> The ultimate goal. Not necessarily because it\u2019s the most beautiful climb, but because of the unparalleled cycling history. Climbing Alpe d\u2019Huez<\/strong> means riding over legendary terrain: the mountain where the Tour de France has finished dozens of times, where the excitement is always palpable, and where turn 7 \u2013 better known as the Dutch bend \u2013 turns orange every year. Cycling in Alpe d\u2019Huez<\/strong> It\u2019s an experience you won\u2019t forget soon. In 2024, the Tour de France Femmes finished here for the first time. It was a historic moment, and I had the honor of riding the climb ahead of the pro peloton with twenty other women from ESF. How it was, and why you should definitely do this climb yourself? Climbing Alpe d\u2019Huez<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Alpe d\u2019Huez is notorious for its steep start, but the climb offers breathtaking views that make every uphill climb worthwhile. Each bend is named after a cycling legend, a source of inspiration, and a reminder of the sport\u2019s heroes. This experience made me curious: would the name of a female champion ever be inscribed here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u2018general rehearsal\u2019 starts in Allemond. Via the \u2018voie verte\u2019 we cycle to Bourg d\u2019Oisans, where the foot of Alpe d\u2019Huez awaits us. The first kilometers are overwhelming, but as we climb higher, the landscape becomes more friendly and the countdown to the turns begins. Once above, a beautiful photo opportunity awaits us. What a great moment to climb this mountain with so many strong women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the peloton from<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday morning I descend down the Pas de la Confession<\/a>. Less steep, fewer curves, no cars, really a very nice start to the day. And then it\u2019s finally here, I get to ride the ESF\/France Montagnes women\u2019s team up the hill. We\u2019re just ahead of the pros so the atmosphere is great. The climb is fast and every curve feels like a springboard to the next one, thanks to the great crowd as well. The 14-kilometer climb and 1,100 meters of elevation pass by, and before I know it we\u2019re over the finish line. What a fantastic ride!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the climb, the well-deserved reward is to watch the finish in Alpe d\u2019Huez from the VIP area. A thrilling battle between Demi Vollering and Kasia Niewiadoma. The atmosphere is fantastic; Alpe d\u2019Huez really embraces the TDFF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than the Alpe d\u2019Huez<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But Is\u00e8re is more than just the Alps. The region offers a variety of challenging climbs that are perfect for the road bike. Take for example Col de Sarenne, a less well-known climb that is located nearby. It offers a quieter alternative to the busy roads of Alpe d\u2019Huez and is certainly worth a visit with its unique landscapes and quiet roads. In the region you will find many well-known cols from the many France\u2019s Tours. The Glandon, the Croix-de-Fer, the Galibier<\/a>. Too many to mention, actually. Or how about the less-known climb, the Col du Sabot, to Vaujany?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cycling in the Is\u00e8re requires good preparation, both physically and technically. Here are some essential tips for anyone who wants to tackle these legendary climbs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Train on Variation:<\/strong> Is\u00e8re offers a wide range of trails from steep shorter climbs to longer alpine slopes. Adjust your training accordingly to accommodate both types of climbs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Hydration and Nutrition:<\/strong> Make sure you drink plenty of water and bring enough food with you. Choose your sports nutrition, whether it be bars, gels, nuts and\/or bananas. Think about the nutritional value!<\/li>\n\n\n\n

    My experience in Is\u00e8re was so much more than just the physical challenge. The rich cycling history, combined with the natural beauty of the region, make Is\u00e8re a top destination for any cycling enthusiast. Whether you are a seasoned climber or a recreational cyclist, the mountains of Is\u00e8re offer challenges and satisfaction for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tips for eating and drinking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    In addition to the climbs, the hospitality in the region is truly top-notch. Local cafes and restaurants offer the perfect stops to recharge and try the local cuisine, which is constantly evolving. The opportunity to meet other cycling enthusiasts from all over the world enriches the experience even more. We spend the night in the Hotel Royal Ours Blanc<\/a>. A perfect starting point for a cycling holiday in the region. During this trip, we also get to try out a new kind of fork Camp de Base<\/a>.
