A week of cycling in Denmark at Landal S\u00f8h\u00f8jlandet. Not the first proposal that usually comes up. With three cyclists, with all three having different wishes, we set off. One wanted to cycle as much as possible, the other trained for gran fondos and the last (cycling) holiday was to be celebrated. Everyone got what they wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were some doubts beforehand. How is the weather? Is the course challenging? What are the possibilities for variety? What is the environment like? All these doubts were very unjustified. Because, spoiler alert, it was a fantastic week of cycling and there is also plenty to do for the family. Hurry up and make the ideal holiday week. On the way back, the question arose. If you were to buy a holiday home, would you choose this area or the Vosges? After all, it is about the same distance away. It was a tie 1-1. What a huge advantage compared to the trip there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rolling hills <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We are staying in Landal S\u00f8h\u00f8jlandet<\/a> in the small town of Gjern. A real family park with various types of houses. A large indoor swimming pool, MTB trails, a golf course, play equipment and a restaurant. They also have a bike wash and repair stand. Ideal for us. From here we will explore Central Jutland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exploring begins on the first day with a visit to the highest point in Denmark. It is 171m above sea level. That sounds like little. In the Netherlands there are even higher hills. But in a journey of 120km, it is almost no flat ground. We get well above 1000hm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nice story. Until the 19th century, the Danes thought that another place was the highest point in Denmark. There is also a nice landmark there, a hotel\/restaurant and a playground. However, after new measurements, it turned out that this is only the 6th peak in the country. It is still much more pleasant there than at the real peak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term rolling hills was coined for this area. It keeps going up or down. If you really want to get strong, this is the ideal training area. You can do intervals on the hills or steadily pedal on the power. Every few kilometers, you can test your cycling skills or blast past someone from behind at speed. All day long, you can enjoy cycling and, in the meantime, keep each other in mind. The strongest will naturally rise to the top. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The infrastructure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The cycling infrastructure is top-notch. There are numerous small (farmer-)roads. Along the major roads there are good cycling paths. The cycling paths are not suitable for large groups of people, but alone or in a small group it\u2019s top-notch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the roads, cars are very considerate of you. They only overtake when it is safe to do so, and they also drive with plenty of space around them. Of course, there is always someone who doesn\u2019t do that, but we are used to that in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, you should be especially careful at intersections. Not so much for danger, but you must react in time. After or at the intersection, things can get really hectic. If you want to avoid having to leave the road when Roy van den Berg is on the track, you must switch back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sightseeing Aarhus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the visit of Denmark\u2019s highest points, Aarhus is a major attraction. Aarhus is also much more enjoyable than a monument on a hilltop. By bike, you can make a nice tour from the Landal park towards Aarhus. Aarhus is, after Copenhagen, the largest city in Denmark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We leave the most famous spot in the city, Den Gamly By, behind and look further into the city. Most of the old harbor has been transformed into a place with a lot of modern architecture and art. But the rough edge of the old harbor is still to be found, right next to the city center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just south of the city you will find the beach. With a beautiful bike path that connects the city via the beach to the Moesgaard museum. At the beach you will find the \u201cinfinite bridge\u201d. A nice round pier in the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aarhus is also perfect for a visit by car, by the way. The city is quite compact and easy to explore without a bike. From various museums to shopping. All three of us say: We\u2019ll come back here with our partner again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South of Gjern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you are in Denmark, you cannot avoid Legoland<\/a> Go there. Billund is also within cycling distance. Needless to say, this is also perfectly doable by car. We usually cycle a long loop via Vejle. With Cycling Destination, we have been here before. environment, in Vejle<\/a>. After a delicious sandwich at the most famous bakery chain in Denmark, Lagkagehuset, we drive towards Billund. This chain is found in many places and is therefore always a good stop for breaks during your rides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before we arrive in Billund, we still drive through a beautiful gravel area. Because there are also some fun things to do on a gravel bike here. Riding on gravel for a week might be a bit too ambitious. But the alternation with the road is wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Billund itself isn\u2019t very exciting. But the outside of the Legoland and Lego House are also worth a visit. After driving up the hills we head back to our Landal house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Park Mols Bjerge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just above Aarhus are a number of peninsulas. This is where the Mols Bjerge National Park is located. In this park, it is also quite possible to ride beautiful gravel routes. But we are taking the race bike. It is just too far to cycle from our cottage. So we are going there by car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we arrive, we take out the bikes and explore the national park. This park does not disappoint. Where we encounter a lot of forest in the first few days, here we see very waving fields of corn and grain. Combined with a, manageable, undulating landscape, this conjures up the image we had expected of Denmark beforehand. In the background, you can see the undulating sea constantly. And of course there is a lighthouse. They always have an appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All day we have beautiful views. But it is quite bumpy in the wind. We visit the lighthouse that marks the bay of Aarhus. We also pass the safari park that is here. So there is also something to do for the family here. It is also the day when we encounter most of the other cyclists. Of course, it helps that we are here on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Park \u2013 Landal S\u00f8h\u00f8jlandet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Landal S\u00f8h\u00f8jlandet park where we are staying is just a short drive outside Gjern. It is about 800 kilometers from Utrecht, so it\u2019s about a day\u2019s drive by car. You can also go by train (which is something Maarten and Robbert once did<\/a>That\u2019s quite a big undertaking, but you\u2019ll be in Arhus within a day, and that\u2019s within cycling distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The park is beautifully maintained; the houses have a really cute feel to them. Furthermore, it is fully equipped with all the necessary facilities. You have a swimming pool, a laundry room, a restaurant, a squash court, a climbing wall, there are MTB trails around the corner, and if you have children, there is also an indoor play paradise. To be avoided if you don\u2019t like children\u2026 In short, you won\u2019t be bored!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The restaurant at least offers the option of not having to cook, and there is a shop for essentials. In the end, you\u2019re better off shopping in Gjern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
