You turn up the final hairpin bends of the Stelvio and all you hear is your own breathing and the ticking of the chain and shifting gears. No motorbikes, no campers, no honking. In 2026, you can experience this almost every week somewhere in the Alps. How hot! Car-free cols in the Alps, Pyrenees, Dolomites and more can be found in this article so you can plan your ideal summer. What once started as a few loose local initiatives has grown into a calendar of car-free cols, spread across Italy<\/a>, France<\/a> and Switzerland<\/a>. So cyclists can turn holidays into altimeters this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dolomites - Sella Ronda without exhaust fumes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Sellaronda Bike Day<\/strong> is the first introduction to car-free climbing for many cyclists. The 55-kilometre loop around the Sella massif takes in four well-known passes: Passo Gardena<\/strong>, Passo Sella<\/strong>, Passo Pordoi<\/strong> and Passo Campolongo<\/strong>. Together account for some 1,700 altimeters. The Sellaronda<\/a> is a true classic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will be two editions in 2026: Saturday 6 June<\/strong> and Saturday 12 September<\/strong>. The roads will close at 8:30 am and remain closed to motorised traffic until 3:30 pm. No registration required, no starting fee. The atmosphere: a long string of climbers between the mountainsides, coffee stops at the rifugios, and on the Pordoi the monument to Fausto Coppi. Starting early and riding anti-clockwise is the recommended direction. After 11am, the coffee stops are crowded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basecamp:<\/strong> Corvara<\/strong> at Alta Badia<\/a>. Bike-friendly hotels, good parking, and you're at the foot of the first climb within minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stelvio - the tough stuff<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For heavier routes, there is Enjoy Stelvio Valtellina<\/a><\/strong>. This programme, now in its ninth edition, regularly closes the Central Alps' toughest passes between May and September. And we are talking about the Stelvio<\/strong>, Gavia<\/strong>, Mortirolo<\/strong> and the Cancano Lakes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The big day is 29 August<\/strong>: then all three sides of the Stelvio close. From Bormio<\/a>, from Trafoi and via the Swiss Umbrail Pass<\/em>. That's the 24th edition of the Cima Coppi Climb. Sixteen hours of cycling alone on 48 hairpin turns and almost 1,800 altimeters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mortirolo on a car-free morning is already tough (average 10.5%). The Gavia on the same day makes the ride even harder. Compact gear (34\u00d732 or larger) is common here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basecamp:<\/strong> Bormio<\/strong>. Centrally located for Stelvio, Gavia AND Mortirolo. Bike-friendly hotels with stabling and work stands, and thermal baths for recovery afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Col Series Oisans -French Alps - a different legend every Tuesday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the Oisans<\/strong>, the home of Alpe d'Huez, turns the Oisans Col Series<\/a><\/strong> for years on Tuesday mornings in July and August. A different col each week, free, no registration, with ravitaillation at the summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schedules include: Col de la Croix de Fer<\/strong>, Col du Glandon<\/strong>, Col de Sarenne<\/strong> and finally Alpe d'Huez<\/strong> itself, with 21 corners. The latter is traditionally run on a Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Hautes-Alpes<\/strong> one organises the Tourn\u00e9e des Grands Cols<\/strong>: five days in a row a different col. Galibier<\/strong> (2.642m), Izoard<\/strong>, Col Agnel<\/strong>, Col du Granon<\/strong> and Col de l'\u00c9chelle<\/strong>. Closures usually between 9:00 and 12:00. In Haute-Savoie<\/strong> is the Col de Joux Plane<\/strong> Car-free on 20 July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, you can ride several car-free cols in the Oisans region in one week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basecamp:<\/strong> Bourg d'Oisans<\/strong>. At the foot of Alpe d'Huez, with many bakeries and facilities for cyclists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Switzerland - extra quiet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Switzerland does things differently. Fewer large-scale events, more structurally car-free roads. One of the key initiatives is the Ride the Alps<\/a>. This initiative's climbs are mainly in the Valais-Wallis region. Expect a car-free Sanetsch pass<\/a>, as a classic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Grosse Scheidegg<\/strong> near Grindelwald is closed to car traffic all year round (postbuses only). Ten kilometres of climbing at an average of 9.1% in the shadow of the Eiger. There is otherwise hardly any traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tremola<\/strong> to the San Gottardo<\/strong> runs through 38 hairpin bends over historic cobblestones. Part of the Ride the Alps<\/strong>-programme. Many cyclists opt for sturdy tyres here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, on Saturday 8 August<\/strong> at D\u00fcdingen<\/strong> in the canton of Fribourg, a 49- or 59-kilometre circuit over 12 smaller passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you piece together your summer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can combine. One week Bormio<\/strong> around the Stelvio and Gavia days at the end of August, moving on to the Dolomites<\/strong> for the Sellaronda on 12 September. Or start in early June with Sellaronda on 6 June, then the Gavia on the 5th and Mortirolo on the 9th. Cancellations occur in extreme circumstances, which may require a buffer day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the morning of the event, local sites provide the latest information: bormio.eu<\/strong> for Italy, bike-oisans.com<\/strong> for France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
