The C\u00e9vennes. The forgotten mountain region in the Central Massif. Where you encounter more deer than cars, where the roads are slick like a billiard cloth and where the climbs are at least as tough as in the Alps. Only: without the traffic jams of campers, motorcycles and loads of cycling tourists who jostle each other for the best photo or try to imitate the pros. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We understand. You think of cycling in France and your mind goes to Alpe d'Huez<\/a>, The Tourmalet, perhaps the Ballon d\u2019Alsace<\/a>. It makes sense. But if you really want to climb abandoned roads this summer, with steep slopes and villages where time seems to stand still, then you should head to C\u00e9vennes<\/strong>. Located between Loz\u00e8re<\/strong> en Gard<\/strong>, Right in the middle of the National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), there is a network of D-roads that seem to have been specially built for cyclists. Spoiler: it\u2019s not that, but it does feel that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why C\u00e9vennes and not the Alps or the Pyrenees?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A fair comparison. The Alps are iconic, the Pyrenees are epic. But the C\u00e9vennes has something that these two don't have anymore: peace and quiet. We'll take a moment to explain what that is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there\u2019s this: the Vosges and Jura are beautiful, but the climbs there are more manageable. In the C\u00e9vennes you ride cols of 20+ kilometers with stretches of 15 to 20%. That\u2019s a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mont Aigoual: the climb you have to cycle in the Cevennes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Mont Aigoual is a climb you can't avoid if you go cycling in the Cevennes<\/strong>. With its 1,567 meters, it is, after Mont Loz\u00e8re, the highest mountain in the region and the highest point you can reach by bike. The road to the characteristic observatory on the top is literally and figuratively the highlight of the Cevennes. You can\u2019t get any higher than here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes Mont Aigoual unique is the number of ways you can climb it. There are no fewer than eight different routes leading to the summit: four via wider main roads and another four via smaller, quieter mountain paths. That makes Mont Aigoual not only one of the most famous climbs in the Cevennes, but also one of the most versatile. Each side has its own character, its own rhythm and its own view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of climb from Tr\u00e8ves, deep in the Gorges du Tr\u00e9vezel<\/strong>, speaks to the imagination. This side was immortalized in the work of Tim Krabb\u00e9 and takes you slowly up from a rugged ravine towards the bare, open top. The variant from Rousses is considered the toughest of all, with steeper passages and a more irregular course that forces you to find your pace again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is precisely this variety that makes Mont Aigoual an essential climb for anyone who wants to do it seriously. climbing and cycling in the Cevennes<\/strong>.
