But the real question is not whether you ride those 21 hairpins once, but where you sleep if you want more than one climb and a selfie at bend 7. The answer lies in the region below those bends: <strong>Oisans<\/strong>. And once you leaf through the official cycling guide of Oisans Tourisme, you quickly understand why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oisans carries the label <strong>Territoire V\u00e9lo<\/strong>, awarded by the French cycle touring federation. That sounds like marketing, but in practice it means: 20 mapped cycling routes, labelled accommodation, bike-friendly shuttles, free charging points and repair tools at the tourist offices. This is a region that has fully geared itself to cyclists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Le Bourg-d\u2019Oisans \u2013 the logical starting point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Le Bourg-d\u2019Oisans<\/strong> sits at 720 m in the Romanche valley, right at the crossroads of several valleys. The classic climb to <strong>Alpe d'Huez<\/strong> literally starts at the edge of the village. But from that same spot you also roll towards the <strong>Col du Galibier<\/strong>, the <strong>Croix de Fer<\/strong>, <strong>Les 2 Alpes<\/strong> and the dead-end road to <strong>La B\u00e9rarde<\/strong> in the heart of the \u00c9crins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"19057\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/2024_FranceMontagnes_ESF_TDFFemmes_AlpedHuez_0057%C2%A9NilsLouna-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"24 legendary climbs from the Tour de France \u2013 Alpe d\u2019Huez\" class=\"wp-image-19057\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Alpe d\u2019Huez \u00a9NilsLouna<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes <strong>Le Bourg-d\u2019Oisans<\/strong> so strong as a base: you don\u2019t have to touch the car. Every morning you choose a direction, and every direction offers something different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Great cycling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legendary climb to <strong>Alpe d'Huez<\/strong> is <a href=\"\/en\/stories\/france\/french-alps\/cycling-in-the-alps-alpe-dhuez-bourgueil-and-duesans-guide\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"1587\">of course the first<\/a> you ride. 13.8 km at 7.9% average, 1,266 metres of climbing, numbered hairpins. Marco Pantani\u2019s record (37\u201935\u201d) still stands. But Oisans offers more after that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Want to experience the same mountain in a completely different way? Then take the \u201cwild\u201d variant via the <strong>Col de Sarenne<\/strong>. That route (52 km, 1,705 m) first takes you through the Ferrand valley, where you meet more sheep than cars, and brings you to Alpe d\u2019Huez via the back. A very different atmosphere, very different legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"mycols-embed-col\"><p lang=\"nl\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mycols.app\/nl\/beklimming\/col-de-sarenne-alpe-dhuez\" target=\"_blank\">Col de Sarenne<\/a>, Alpe d'Huez, France<\/p>\u2022 Distance: 2.9 km, Elevation difference: 255 m, Average gradient: 8.7 %<\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/mycols.app\/js\/embed.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the big day there is the <strong>Col de la Croix de Fer<\/strong> and <strong>Col du Glandon<\/strong>: 80 km, 2,086 metres of climbing, and a climb that takes you through the Eau d\u2019Olle valley to the border of Savoie. At the Grand\u2019Maison lake the rocky valley gives way to open alpine meadows. At the top you look out on the Aiguilles d\u2019Arves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"11983\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AdobeStock_396124913-1024x683.webp\" alt=\"24 legendary climbs from the Tour de France \u2013 Col du Glandon\" class=\"wp-image-11983\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Col du Glandon (c) adobe stock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then there is the route to <strong>La B\u00e9rarde<\/strong> (66 km, 1,250 m), a dead-end road that ends at the foot of the Barre des \u00c9crins at 4,102 m. Two tough stretches of 11% along the way, but the rest climbs gradually along the turquoise water of the V\u00e9n\u00e9on. This climb is not about records but about the natural surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Balcony routes and hidden gems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What sets Oisans apart from other cycling destinations in the Alps are its so-called balcony roads. Roads cut out of the rock face, high above the valley, with a view of everything below you. The <strong>Balcons de l\u2019Oisans<\/strong> (93 km, 3,266 m) strings a whole series together: Auris-en-Oisans, Mont-de-Lans, Mizo\u00ebn, Col de Sarenne, Villard-Reculas. If you love roads in the sky and panoramas, put this one at the top of your list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smaller routes deserve attention too. The climb to <strong>Oulles<\/strong>, the smallest village in the Is\u00e8re, is only 7 km long but twists through hairpins on a south-facing slope full of pine trees. And the road to <strong>Villard-Notre-Dame<\/strong> is so narrow and adventurous, with three unlit tunnels, that you really shouldn\u2019t set off without lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Infrastructure and logistics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good destination has climbs. A good base camp has logistics. Both are in order here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of <strong>Voie Verte<\/strong>, a car-free route from Venosc to Allemond via Le Bourg-d\u2019Oisans, links three valleys and takes you stress-free to the foot of the big cols. From late June to late August a free shuttle with a bike trailer runs on the same stretch, seven days a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accommodations and overnight stays<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accommodation with the <strong>Home Cyclo Oisans<\/strong>label offer specific cycling facilities, from secure storage to laundry service, rated on a scale of one to three bikes. Handy to filter on when you book. In the village itself you\u2019ll find bike shops for rental and repairs, and the tourist offices have repair tools ready for emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe id=\"stay22-widget\" width=\"100%\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/stay22.com\/embed\/68bebcfdaf551e62d54a3eac\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/stories\/oisans-col-series-more-car-free-cols-9-legendary-options\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"22945\">Oisans Col Series<\/a><\/strong>: every Tuesday morning in July and August one col or route is closed to motor traffic. Then you have the road all to yourself. Alpe d\u2019Huez, Croix de Fer, Sarenne: they all feature. You can\u2019t do that in such an organised way anywhere else. Check the current programme on oisans-col-series.com, as dates and routes can change per season. <strong>Please note:<\/strong> in 2026 the Oisans Col Series take a year off; they return in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to go and what to watch out for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The higher cols (Galibier, Croix de Fer, Sarenne) are seasonal. Opening dates vary per year and depend on snowfall. Always check <strong>bike-oisans.com<\/strong> for up-to-date information on col openings, lift operations and shuttle times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also: bring lights. Several routes include tunnels, some of them unlit. The descents after a pass deserve attention: narrow roads, sharp bends, and now and then an oncoming car on a road that is really only just wide enough for one vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After day one in Oisans the question soon becomes which climb is up tomorrow, not whether there is anything left to ride. <strong>Alpe d'Huez<\/strong> is the lure. <strong>Oisans<\/strong> is the reason you stay.<\/p>\n\n\n<!-- cd-merged:1587 -->\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cycling in the Is\u00e8re: Alpe d\u2019Huez and more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you say \"bicycle\" in France, you say <a href=\"https:\/\/cutt.ly\/LLg0HTf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Is\u00e8re<\/a>. That equates to Bourg d\u2019Oisans and once you\u2019re in Bourg d\u2019Oisans, you can only think of the Alpe: Alpe d\u2019Huez. With its 21 turns, rich history for both pros, beginners and everyone in between, you\u2019re here in the beating heart of cycling tourism. Yet the experts agree: \u2018The Alp\u2019 is certainly not the most beautiful climb there is and it\u2019s certainly not the hardest climb either. In fact, there might be 100 mountains that are more interesting than the Alpe d\u2019Huez. There\u2019s even one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cycling-challenge.com\/100-cycling-climbs-better-than-alpe-dhuez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">entire website<\/a> Dedicated to them. We are closing our case. That is why we are now offering some alternatives for cycling the Is\u00e8re, which may be more fun, more difficult or more beautiful than the \u201921 virages d\u2019Alpe D\u2019Huez\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"290\" data-id=\"2363\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Panorama-21turns-1024x290.jpg\" alt=\"Oisans is the base for Alpe d&#039;Huez and more\" class=\"wp-image-2363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Panorama-21turns-1024x290.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Panorama-21turns-300x85.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Panorama-21turns-768x218.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Panorama-21turns.jpg 1284w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collet de Vaujany<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This little giant is hardly mentioned at all when it comes to the Isere. You can find it in the two Vaujany events: <a data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"www.gfny.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gfny.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GFNY<\/a> But otherwise, it seems that people are ignoring this climb. It could be because this climb (also) leads to nowhere, so it\u2019s not really suitable for a nice round trip. But with 9.4 kilometers and a steep climb that rivals the Passo Giau, you\u2019ll be rewarded with a sweet feeling after this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"413\" data-id=\"2369\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vaujany-1024x413.jpg\" alt=\"Oisans is the base for Alpe d&#039;Huez and more, photo 2\" class=\"wp-image-2369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vaujany-1024x413.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vaujany-300x121.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vaujany-768x310.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vaujany.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alpe d\u2019Huez from the other side:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you talk about Alpe d\u2019Huez, there\u2019s only one side. The one with those 21 turns. It\u2019s always about the Dutch turn, turn 7. About the world of the late Marco Pantani. But there\u2019s another side too. It\u2019s less spectacular and less steeped in cycling history. But if you\u2019re in the area anyway. The route is much friendlier in terms of slope percentage and you end up riding the final stretch on the same route as the more famous climb. This pass is also known as the Pas de la Confession. You start in the village of Allemond, not in Bourg d\u2019Oisans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you reach the top, you have three choices: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Directly back via the same road<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Back through the famous 21 turns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Driving on to the Col de Sarenne<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We would choose the latter, then descend to the dam lake and then take a nice walk around the area. Not bad, if it's up to us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Col du Sabot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little north of Alpe d\u2019Huez you\u2019ll find this beautiful climb. It\u2019s a \u2018one-way\u2019 so you\u2019ll unfortunately have to ride the same route up as you descend down. But let\u2019s be clear: this climb is a definite must-do. The top is much higher than that of its neighbor, because in total 14.5 kilometers, with a percentage of 8.9, this road takes you to 2,100 meters elevation. But it\u2019s much quieter there and the views are much better than those of its famous brother. Moreover, the number of hairpin bends is certainly not to be missed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" data-id=\"2366\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/89436007_1318012351726113_1232681495424925696_n.jpg\" alt=\"Oisans is the base for Alpe d&#039;Huez and more, photo 3\" class=\"wp-image-2366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/89436007_1318012351726113_1232681495424925696_n.jpg 750w, https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/89436007_1318012351726113_1232681495424925696_n-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(c) MyCols<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Col du Parquetout<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have already seen this climb before, namely in our overview of cols where you can climb. <a href=\"\/en\/stories\/5-climbs-in-the-french-and-swiss-alps\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1250\">probably have never heard of it before. <\/a> A beautiful climb, which doesn't necessarily have a high point, so that also offers opportunities for longer days in the year. However, this one will hurt! With only 1382 meters of elevation, it's not a high climb, but in 7.1 kilometers you climb up an average of 9.7% meters.
