It\u2019s the end of March, the weather in the Netherlands is once again acting up, and you\u2019re scrolling through destinations that are already running nicely. The Valencia region comes up. Valencia: Beach city, right? That\u2019s true. But also: water-rich areas, forest paths, natural springs and some beautiful elevation meters. Valencia is a real cycling destination, so it\u2019s definitely not just about the city and the beach, but also about beautiful cycling.<\/em> We delved into the routes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city of Valencia and the the surrounding region<\/a> It often sells itself as a sun-drenched destination. Logical, with that Mediterranean climate and that endless coastline. But for cyclists, the real appeal lies elsewhere: the region changes character surprisingly quickly. You ride through a flat city park in the morning, along dunes and a freshwater lake in the afternoon, and the next day you climb through forest roads between the springs of the Sierra Calderona<\/strong>. All that without having to move. One base camp, three beautiful routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flat city makes Valencia a real cycling destination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The city of Valencia<\/strong> is virtually completely flat and has such 200 kilometers of bike paths<\/a>. A classic route is the one through the old riverbed of the Turia River. This has been converted into a continuous park that cuts through the city. As a cyclist, you have a continuous corridor from the Cabecera Park to the City of Arts and Sciences<\/strong> And finally the coast. It\u2019s quite busy, so not ideal for a block training session, but that\u2019s not what it\u2019s meant for either. It\u2019s a great way to discover the city. Along the way you pass the Torres de Serranos, the cathedral, the Palacio del Marqu\u00e9s de Dos Aguas and the port. All on a bike path, without any interruptions from cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historic center is designed for low speeds, and the route from the park to the monument to the sea follows a kind of logical line. For a first day, this is ideal to get to know the city, get in the mood, and then end at the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019Albufera: secretly very beautiful<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once you\u2019ve completed the route through the river, it\u2019s time to venture out of the city. Valencia as a cycling destination really comes into its own where the city ends and nature begins. From the City of Arts and Sciences<\/strong> are you driving southwards? Pinedo<\/strong>, El Saler<\/strong> and the Albufera Natural Park<\/strong>. It\u2019s a round trip of almost 70 kilometers in the summer and about 63 km in the winter, through a protected nature reserve, and the landscape changes constantly: beach, pine forest, dunes, rice fields, and then the lake itself, the largest freshwater lake in Spain. You\u2019ll need your gravel bike here, because you\u2019ll definitely encounter some beautiful gravel paths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
