Nowadays, you can choose from more and more destinations. <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/stories\/kroatie-ontdekken-istrie-als-eerste-stop\/\">Croatia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/stories\/slovenia-land-of-tour-winners-climbs-and-stunning-views-2\/\">Slovenia<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/stories\/rik-op-reis-griekenland\/\">Greece<\/a> His well-known options. After watching the Netflix documentary \u2018Biking Borders\u2019, we were completely fascinated by cycling in Albania. This Balkan country is well known to many for the Eurovision Song Contest and UEFA qualifying matches. This part of Europe often has to work a little harder to become a cycling destination. In our opinion, this is unfair. Albania offers many opportunities for a wonderful cycling holiday. The organization <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyclealbania.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cycle Albania<\/a> gave us some beautiful inspiration! Enjoy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"2650\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/drini-teta-iRpJ7sk7kTQ-unsplash-1-1024x645.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2650\"\/><figcaption>Bovilla Reservoir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"douze-points\">Twelve points!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We couldn\u2019t help but make this joke. The connection to Albania and the Eurovision Song Contest is well known. But as Max and Nono already showed in Biking Borders: Albania offers so much more. For us Dutch people, a cycling holiday won\u2019t necessarily offer all the luxury we\u2019re used to. But is that a bad thing? That\u2019s often called \u2018managing expectations\u2019. Because the luxury of a stay is usually not what you spend days talking about. It\u2019s about the experience, the surroundings, and that\u2019s more than just a luxury hotel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"520\" data-id=\"2652\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Th10_prbig_2095.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Th10_prbig_2095.jpeg 850w, https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Th10_prbig_2095-300x184.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Th10_prbig_2095-768x470.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><figcaption>Roads like these<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gravel-en-race\">Gravel AND race<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay, let\u2019s get right into it. This destination is perhaps more suited to the gravel bike, but definitely don\u2019t underestimate the race bike possibilities. That\u2019s the beauty of the unknown Albania. We want to go now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"unesco-route\">UNESCO ROUTE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As mentioned, we want to focus here on the UNESCO route, such as the one offered by Cycle Albania. In 10 days, you can make a tour from the capital Tirana in a southern direction and do a \u2018tour of Albania\u2019. The route officially starts at the northern tip of the beautiful Orhid Lake. You can explore the area there in stunning style. Admittedly, there are worse places to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"2655\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/antonio-janeski-EUz2CurxDbg-unsplash-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2655\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">(c) Antonio Janeski<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"2656\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/antonio-janeski-cvIv3oODSqI-unsplash-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2656\"\/><figcaption><meta charset=\"utf-8\">(c) Antonio Janeski<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"naar-het-zuiden-de-bergen-in\">Southwards into the mountains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the south side of the lake, you head towards K\u00f6r\u00e7e via Pogradec. The climbing here is breathtaking. First, you head to a slightly higher mountain plateau, where you can gain several hundred meters of elevation in a short time. Once in K\u00f6r\u00e7e, which is known as the Paris of Albania, things pick up speed. The city of K\u00f6r\u00e7e is definitely worth a stop. It is an important place for several religious denominations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once out of the city, it heads towards the mountains of Grammoz and the Bramash Pass, to finally reach Ersek\u00eb, the highest city in Albania. This section goes up and down between K\u00f6r\u00e7e and Sotir\u00eb, and in 72 kilometers you\u2019ve covered over 1,100 meters of elevation gain. That\u2019s no small feat. You also drive through the wine region of Albania, so for the connoisseur there awaits a delicious glass of local red wine at the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"2660\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/jay-basha-AYBo0zzCpkE-unsplash-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2660\"\/><figcaption>Vjosa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"2659\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/drini-teta-qM1c6rDt6fc-unsplash-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2659\"\/><figcaption>Permit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vjosa-permet\">Vjosa \u2013 Permet <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It then continues in a wavy way southwards along the Vjosa, passing through Permet, which is known for its good cuisine and strong Raki (for the connoisseurs: that\u2019s just like Ouzo, so not much to do with it). It\u2019s really beautiful here, with so much beautiful nature, high mountains, and also a good local cuisine. In Langarica you also have the thermal baths, where you can relax after the ride. What more does a person need?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"2661\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/eni-lale-6BfvwI0HLc8-unsplash-1024x461.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2661\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"zuidelijkste-puntje\">The southernmost point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Albania is south of Greece. The typical Greek landscape can also be seen here. Due to the proximity of \u2018the old\u2019 Greece, you also have beautiful old cities here, such as Gjirokast\u00ebr, whose center has UNESCO status. This is perhaps the most beautiful \u2018museum\u2019 city in the country. Next we come to the second UNESCO site on this route, in the Butrint National Park. Here you find Greek and Roman history together. It was even part of the Venetian empire. An interesting stop on this tour if you are going cycling in Albania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"corfu-is-niet-ver-weg\">Corfu is not far away<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greece is not far from the sea, as the island of Corfu is quite prominent off the coast. For the last part of this UNESCO trip, we quickly head inland again, towards Vl\u00f6re and the Llogara National Park. There lies a climb that is quite a challenge. Pictures often say more than words can describe. We are already ready to go on a trip to this amazing part of the country. We already said it before: Albania offers many opportunities for a wonderful cycling holiday!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-6 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"2653\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/renns-art-YJZQo6GQlfM-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2653\"\/><figcaption>Llogara Pass<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"terug-naar-huis\">Back home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is truly incredible what you can see in this unknown cycling country. Albania has much more to offer besides this route through the south. It is a place you absolutely have to come back to because honestly, if we had the choice, our \u2018douze points\u2019 would definitely go to Albania.
