Hotel says <em>bike-friendly<\/em>, A bike ends up in an open garden shed or a hallway where the cleaning cart is also located. The difference between a label with published criteria and a hotel that puts \u201cbike friendly\u201d on its website itself is huge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We put the four labels that matter most to us as Dutch and Belgian cyclists side by side, at the points where you book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Four labels, one comparison<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bett+Bike<\/strong> (Germany, ADFC) \u00b7 <strong>Home Cycling<\/strong> (France, France V\u00e9lo Tourisme) \u00b7 <strong>Cyclists Welcome!<\/strong> (The Netherlands, Fietsplatform) \u00b7 <strong>Swiss Bike Hotels<\/strong> (Switzerland, Switzerland Tourism \/ hotelleriesuisse)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Safe storage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bett+Bike<\/strong>: closed, covered, lockable space for the night. The Sport variant requires a theft-proof space.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Home Cycling<\/strong>: secure bicycle parking; for accommodations, a closed, secure area on the ground floor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cyclists Welcome!<\/strong>: closed bicycle storage at the accommodation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Swiss Bike Hotels<\/strong>: Bike garage or lockable bicycle storage area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Only \u201cbike friendly\u201d on the hotel website<\/em>: no defined standard. Could be anything.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Repair supplies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bett+Bike<\/strong>Basic repair kit plus contact with a bike workshop. Sport adds special tools and a service corner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Home Cycling<\/strong>: repair kit (tire patch materials, standard wrenches, lubricant, tire pump) or referral to the nearest repair shop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cyclists Welcome!<\/strong>: tire patch kit, bike pump and first aid kit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Swiss Bike Hotels<\/strong>Workshop or repair service, tools available or nearby.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Washing and drying clothes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bett+Bike<\/strong>: drying room for clothes and equipment. Restaurants should be open in the afternoon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cyclists Welcome!<\/strong>: no breakfast minimum in the criteria.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Swiss Bike Hotels<\/strong>: \u201cvitality cuisine\u201d, bike-friendly meals, half-board or full board (or restaurant nearby).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Route information and local knowledge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bett+Bike<\/strong>Regional tourist bike information is mandatory; Sport adds sports-specific maps, GPS equipment and daily weather information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Home Cycling<\/strong>: route guidance, knowledge of local cycling routes, and information about the best route to take.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cyclists Welcome!<\/strong>: no formal requirement in the published criteria, but visibility on route planners and in guides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Swiss Bike Hotels<\/strong>: local travel tips, maps and GPS routes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Charging e-bikes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bett+Bike<\/strong>: charging point is a basic criterion (unless regulations prevent it).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Home Cycling<\/strong>Charging the e-bike battery and charging the phone\/GPS are core services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cyclists Welcome!<\/strong>: Charging point for e-bikes mandatory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Swiss Bike Hotels<\/strong>: not explicitly mentioned in the published criteria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Control and validity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bett+Bike<\/strong>: On-site inspection by trained auditors, certificate valid for <strong>3 years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Home Cycling<\/strong>: strict selection and regular control, label period of <strong>3 years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cyclists Welcome!<\/strong>Annual participation (January\u2013December), managed by Fietsplatform.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Swiss Bike Hotels<\/strong>qualification through hotelleriesuisse and Switzerland Tourism, with a TrustYou-scored threshold.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which label goes with which trip?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bett+Bike<\/strong> This offers the clearest minimum guarantee. Full breakfast, enclosed storage, drying room, repair kit, route knowledge, charging of the e-bike, and all this is checked with a physical inspection. If you book a Bett+Bike address in Germany, you actually no longer need to send a confirmation email (that saves you DMing the reception again ;)).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of <strong>Sport<\/strong>-variant is extra interesting for race bike riders and gravel riders: special tools, a bike wash, sports-specific maps and daily weather reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Home Cycling<\/strong> is the widest label in the range. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.francevelotourisme.com\/accueil-velo\">9,000 certified companies<\/a> in France, and in addition to hotels, there is also bike rental, restaurants, tourist agencies, and attractions. For a multi-day stay in France, where logistics must be coordinated throughout the day, this ecosystem is convenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cyclists Welcome!<\/strong> Works as a light, fast filter for overnight stays along LF routes and node networks in the Netherlands. About 900 companies participate. The threshold is lower than with Bett+Bike, but the basics are in place: closed parking, tire patch kit, pump, and e-bike charging. For a weekend of node stops in your own country, exactly what you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Swiss Bike Hotels<\/strong> They are closer to a premium accommodation segment than to a simple check-off system. Bikegarage, workshop, vitality cuisine, route advice. Ideal for a comfort-oriented cycling holiday in Switzerland, less like a purely checklist label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And what if there is no label at all?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many excellent small hotels, B&amp;Bs and guest houses have no official label. Sometimes because of costs (participation ranges from \u20ac67 per year with Fietsers Welkom! to \u20ac200 per three years with Bett+Bike or Accueil V\u00e9lo), sometimes because they are not on the radar. That does not necessarily make them less suitable. But without a label, there is no external control, and \u201cbike friendly\u201d on a hotel website means exactly the same as the owner\u2019s own understanding of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course we have our own <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/cycling-destination-approved\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"15508\">cycling destination approved<\/a> label. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that case: send a message and ask specifically about closed parking facilities, cooking facilities and breakfast times. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bettundbike.de\/en\/\">ADFC criteria<\/a> For Bett+Bike, a closed, covered, lockable space is the minimum. That is a good benchmark for any hotel, whether it is labeled as such or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you know of a hotel without a label that still has the basics perfectly in order?
