It has been known for a long time that Denmark has snagged the start of the Tour de France. Originally, La Grande Boucle was supposed to start from Copenhagen as early as 2020, but due to all the perils around the world, it is finally two years later. Copenhagen is the epicentre of the start but pretty soon the peloton heads to southern Denmark. Don't expect huge elevation changes here as in the Alps<\/a> or Flemish classics. Beautiful places can be found and for a cycling holiday this is a stunning part of Europe. Based on the trail, here are a few tips for a Cycling Holiday on Funen. Named the cycling island of Denmark (and the rest of Europe) by the tour organisers and the tourism office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Territory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Tour has never been so far from home before. Or at least: The start location Copenhagen<\/a> is the northernmost start location ever. It is therefore appropriate that the first stage (prologue is in\/around Copenhagen) finishes in Nyborg. The route of the first stage is largely in the province of Zealand and goes via a car bridge to the island of Funen (Fyn) in the province of southern Denmark, where Nyborg is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyborg is a pretty town with some real highlights such as Nyborg Castle (over 800 years old) which used to be the centre of the kingdom of Denmark. The surrounding medieval town is also not unattractive (understatement) and, of course, the Great Belt Bridge connecting Sealand with Funen (Fyn) cannot be missed. This architectural masterpiece will be the eye-catcher during the second stage of the Tour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More beauty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From Nyborg you can head in different directions, including north to the so-called 'Finshoved'. This point, actually a kind of peninsula, has beautiful paths, wide views and we have a nice route that takes you past the Viking museum, several cool lighthouses and around the Kerteminde Fjord. Not only Norway<\/a> Has Fjords as you can see. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baltic Sea Cycle Route<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Incidentally, on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, Nyborg is also an important and natural hub. The 820-kilometre route, also known as the N8, runs largely across the island of Funen (Fyn). Here, you follow the south side of the island, passing beautiful places like Helnaes, where you literally ride between the water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A picturesque town like Svendborg should not be missed as a stop either. The further you drive from Svendborg towards Helnaes, the closer you get to the island's highest point, Lerbjerg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cycling city Odense<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

West of Nyborg at about 35 kilometres you will find Odense. The island's capital was Denmark's official cycling capital from 2009 to 2012. Although you naturally prefer cycling outside a city rather than in one, Odense is well worth the effort. Lots of cycle paths, green cycling waves and good hotels make Odense an ideal basecamp to explore the rest of the island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
