At the time of writing the Volta ao Algarve is in full swing. Later in the year the men\u2019s professional cycling race, the Tour of Portugal, will be scheduled and then you can see what beautiful Portugal has to offer. When you go cycling in Portugal you have to take into account the undulating terrain, as it is aptly called. We give you 10 of the best climbs in the country of Fado, Port and Pastel de nata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5097\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ricardo-rocha-yPgVbOWDM-unsplash-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5097\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"montejunto\">Montejunto<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This climb can be found in the Serra de Montejunto, just north of the capital Lisbon. It is not very high, but is open enough. In the summer, it is a bit more of a challenge. You can also enjoy some beautiful hiking here. There is some challenge in this hill, as you have to cover about 5% kilometers in 11 in an average time, and those aren\u2019t in a straight line up. With some steep slopes of up to 18% on some short stretches, this is no easy task! The climb isn't particularly steep, let alone having big ascents. A wonderful long climb, ala the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/stories\/austria\/cycling-in-innsbruck-city-among-the-mountains\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1735\">Brennerpass<\/a> in the Innsbruck region. This climb can be found in the N2 Challenge and is a beautiful climb in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/stories\/portugal\/north-portugal-an-underexposed-cycling-destination-in-europe\/\">Douro<\/a> valley, perhaps the most beautiful part of Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"668\" data-id=\"5087\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/River-.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5087\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/River-.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/River--300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/River--768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"col-de-torres-covilha\">Col de Torres \u2013 Covilha<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This climb is the most famous climb in Portugal. Often featured in the round of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitportugal.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Portugal<\/a> This is a real distinctive climb. It lies roughly next to its little brother, the Manteigas, and you can make a beautiful \u2018Ronda Estrella\u2019, a la <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/stories\/classic-ride-sella-ronda\/\">Sella Ronda<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/stories\/cycling-in-the-majestic-dolomites\/\">Dolomites<\/a>. Make sure you put the right legs underneath it, because this isn\u2019t an easy round. However, the views are breathtaking. Be sure to avoid going too early or too late in the year, because it can snow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5083\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/renato-cerqueira-bBvfHC7GkzE-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5083\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"manteigas\">Manteigas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the province of Guarda lies this iconic Portuguese climb. It is (in the best version) 15 kilometers long, with an average of 4%. You go up here towards a real ski resort. You might not have expected that in this region. There are beautiful hairpin bends and at some points you have a stunning view. The climb isn\u2019t extremely steep, so you also drive through the beautiful forests for a large part of it. That\u2019s great in the summer. There are several variants, the longest of which is 26 kilometers. Beautiful, in our opinion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5078\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/luis-cardoso-JND-hp3EZNk-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5078\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5080\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/luis-cardoso-NkAFeqfh6Ss-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5080\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"zezere-de-klim-naar-de-gletsjer-803-hm-13km-6-5\">Zezere \u2013 the climb to the glacier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"zezere-de-klim-naar-de-gletsjer-803-hm-13km-6-5\">The climb to this glacier is famous, notorious, and therefore a beautiful challenge. With 13 kilometers ahead and over 800 meters of elevation to overcome, this is one of the tougher challenges when cycling in Portugal. In the end, you end up averaging 6.5% kilometers, and that\u2019s just a hefty climb. Why should you definitely tackle this magnificent climb? It\u2019s also located in the Serra de Estrella, so it fits nicely into the lineup with Manteigas and Torres. Be sure to go in the first few months of spring, because then the waterfalls are at their best. The melting snow is mainly responsible for this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.komoot.nl\/tour\/677145482\/embed?profile=1\" width=\"100%\" height=\"680\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"arnaso-naar-calcedonia\">Arnaso to Calcedonia <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the way in the north of the country, near the border with the Spanish province of Galicia, you\u2019ll find the climb to Calcedonia. Be careful when you Google it, because you\u2019ll quickly get all sorts of offers for new underwear. A beautiful hidden gem. The climb is 6 kilometers long and you\u2019ll cover almost 350 meters of elevation gain. So you have an average climb of 6% kilometers ahead of you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"col-de-santo-antonio\">Col de Santo Antonio <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact that this list focuses on the Serra da Estrella shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise. There are a lot of hidden climbs. If you go to Unhais da Serra, you really have to climb up the 14 kilometers via 860 meters of elevation gain and 14 kilometers of painful uphill kilometers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-6 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5096\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/goncalo-verdasca-V-XL4lecZnU-unsplash-2-1024x552.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5096\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"col-de-seia\">Col de Seia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This climb is a monster in length. At an average of 28%.5 kilometers, you won\u2019t just be heading home. The highest percentage of elevation gain is 10%, so you\u2019ll need good legs too. This is another variation of the \u2018Torre\u2019 climb. But definitely not a bad one. The climbs to the top are all long and painful. This is no exception. Many riders of the Volta A Portugal will curse this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-7 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/c08363f6-032a-485e-b245-26c6e6e4527a\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"col-de-gois\">Col de Gois <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a nice challenge that you should start slowly. It is located just south of the Serra de Estrella and you can therefore easily combine it if you wish. There are several events, but the most famous is the N2 Challenge, which this one is also part of. It is a long race, with an 4% average distance of over 15 kilometers. That is 525 meters of elevation gain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-8 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5094\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/daniel-pascoa-_b5qqHLlF7c-unsplash-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5094\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5095\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/joao-pinheiro-FqTZVCWb4Go-unsplash-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5095\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5093\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/gustavo-serra-x7FRNUaHFtY-unsplash-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5093\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"col-de-cabeca\">Col de Cabeca<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you thought you were done cycling, think about climbing this col in the Serra de Estrella National Park. With 31 kilometers and over 1,600 meters of elevation gain at 5.5%, this might be the most challenging climb in all of Portugal.
