Stories that mainly include Classic Rides, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/classic-rides\/classic-ride-alto-de-langliru\/\">Angliru<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/stories-2\/col-du-grand-saint-bernard-a-real-classic\/\">Col du Grand Saint Bernard<\/a>. They also went on a trip with us in the beautiful Valais-Wallis region, for a <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/stories-2\/cycling-in-valais-anzere-region-of-grapes-and-dreamy-climbs\/\">adventure in Anzere<\/a>. So, let\u2019s enjoy it. We\u2019re going to continue creating beautiful stories, about classic climbs or beautiful areas, from which you can draw beautiful route and cycling inspiration. This time we\u2019ve landed in France, in Alsace. The three balloons of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visit.alsace\/nl\/massief-van-de-vogezen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Vogezen<\/a>. Who hasn\u2019t driven one of these? We\u2019ll cover them in three bite-sized chunks. Today we\u2019re focusing on the <strong>Ballon d\u2019Alsace<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Erwin &amp; Erwin \u2013 Mountainhighchasers<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One balloon or three<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2014 I bought my first bike. Before that, I didn\u2019t really care for bicycles; I hardly looked at them and I had absolutely no idea about all the unwritten rules. So until 2014. In that same year I fell in love with bicycles and everything that has to do with them. Partly thanks to a classic trip through the <strong>French Vosges.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"9580\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/20220603_1214471-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"ballon d&#039;alsace, cycling in france, france, voges, cycling in the voges, cycling in the elzas, elzas, race bikes france, mountain high chasers\" class=\"wp-image-9580\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Good to be in the Vogezen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Vogezen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before I went there in 2014, to be honest, I had never heard of the <strong>Vogezen<\/strong> I\u2019ve heard that. And that\u2019s while you drive past it every year on your way to the Alps. The <strong>Vogezen<\/strong> It is a medium-high mountain range and at 600 kilometers from Utrecht it is an ideal location for a long weekend away. If you have never cycled in the mountains before, this is an excellent destination. There are gentle climbs, beautiful descents, and the road surface is generally good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A well-known cycling event in the Vosges is the <strong>Three Balloons<\/strong>. I don't want to discuss it here directly. <strong>Granfondo \u201cLes 3 Ballons\u201d <\/strong>(although I can recommend everyone to add this to their bucket list), but about the amazing climbs in this region. In a series of three posts, we present the three \u2018big\u2019 balloons of the Vosges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ballon d\u2019Alsace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/classic-rides\/cycling-in-elzas-col-du-petit-ballon-2\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"9983\">Le Petit Ballon<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/en\/stories-2\/classic-ride-cycling-route-to-the-grand-balloon\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"11124\">Grand Ballon<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each climb has its own beautiful aspects. That is why we discuss them in this first article. <strong>Ballon d\u2019Alsace<\/strong>. Because cycling in Alsace and especially in the <strong>Ballon d\u2019Alsace<\/strong> deserves the proper attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"9582\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/20220603_113116-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"ballon d&#039;alsace, cycling in france, france, voges, cycling in the voges, cycling in the elzas, elzas, race bikes france\" class=\"wp-image-9582\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mysterious clouds are gathering together<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back in time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every climb does its best to get a place on the list of the race of races, the <strong>Tour de France<\/strong>. And not entirely without reason, so does the <strong>Ballon d\u2019Alsace<\/strong> Here\u2019s to that. In 1905, this was climbed by the peloton for the first time, making it the first ascent of the Tour de France in the books. Subtle mention of this is made at the top of the Ballon d\u2019Alsace by a modest memorial stone to the first \u2018king of the mountain\u2019 of the Tour: <strong>Ren\u00e9 Pottier<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That there were still many passages after 1905 should therefore be no surprise. In modern cycling, the <strong>Ballon d\u2019Alsace <\/strong>They will no longer be called \u2018the greatest climber of the Tour\u2019, but they will never take the title of \u2018first climber of the Tour\u2019 again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"9583\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/20220603_121459-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"ballon d&#039;alsace, cycling in france, france, vogeos, cycling in the vogeos, cycling in the elzas, elzas, race bikes france, mountain high chasers, trois ballons\" class=\"wp-image-9583\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Good road surface if you go cycling in the Vosges<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Multiple routes to the top<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saint Maurice sur Moselle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A top is always beautiful, especially when you can enjoy it three times! The classic, historic climb starts in <strong>Saint Maurice sur Moselle<\/strong> and is nine kilometers long. From the main road N66, you turn up the climb in one go and immediately start with some hairpin bends. Because you are still driving through a kind of residential area, you don\u2019t immediately have the feeling of being tackling a classic climb, but it is really starting to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"9584\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/20220603_120255-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Cycling in Alsace: Ballon d&#039;Alsace, beginning of the climb, cycling in Alsace, top\" class=\"wp-image-9584\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an average of almost 7%, it\u2019s not the most strenuous and, frankly, it\u2019s not the most beautiful part either. The road runs fairly steadily up and therefore climbs very nicely for the real \u2018stayers\u2019. Thoughts of reaching the top are endless and the steps are numerous. Because this side is the most frequently accessed by the Tour, this route may appeal the most to the imagination. But our advice is: climb the other two routes to the top as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sewen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most beautiful part, in our opinion, starts in <strong>Sewen<\/strong>. From here, you can climb a whopping 12.9 kilometers at an average of 5.2%. Very manageable, but don\u2019t underestimate the middle section where the odometer will regularly reach over 10%. When you allow yourself to stop along the way for a photo, the two lakes you encounter along the way are ideal. Lac de Sewen and Lac d\u2019Alfeld make for a climb like this should be.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"9585\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingdestination.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/20220603_121924-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Cycling in Alsace: Ballon d&#039;Alsace\" class=\"wp-image-9585\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the lakes, the path winds gently through the forest up along the slopes of the Alsace to reach the summit after climbing for over 670 meters. As is the case with all routes, the summit is a classic Vogez summit and the name Ballon truly lives up to it. The reason why many climbs here are called \u2018balloons\u2019 has to do with the rounded peaks. The climb around the summit is slow and ends atop a balloon-shaped mountain. This is particularly visible from the Alsace because you can see the summit almost immediately from the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Giromagny<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last of the three possibilities to get out of the situation starts in <strong>Giromagny<\/strong>. This is by far the longest route, but it also has the friendliest percentages. With a distance of 16.5 kilometers, you quickly think of the high mountains. However, the average increase reveals that this is not the case, because with an average of 4.2%, you still won't get higher than the 1173m of the previous two routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The characteristic feature of this side is the enormously long stretch from Giromagny, where the road winds up gently along a babbling stream. Only after 8 kilometers do the legs really wake up from the higher gradient and, something we always happily talk about, the many hairpin bends leading up to the top.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enough balloons<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here we leave the first balloon on the ground to get you excited about this green environment.
