Gelderland is the largest province in the Netherlands and perhaps the most varied for cycling. In the centre lies the Veluwe, the country’s largest contiguous nature reserve. To the south are the hills around Nijmegen, to the east the Achterhoek, and in between, the dykes along the major rivers.
Why cycle in Gelderland?
- The Veluwezoom, featuring the Posbank, the most famous climb in the eastern Netherlands.
- The Crown Estate and the Hoge Veluwe: woodland and heathland, and plenty of gravel.
- The Nijmegen Region: the Zevenheuvelenweg, Groesbeek and the Duivelsberg.
- The Achterhoek: a landscape of hedgerows and sandy tracks, perfect for a gravel cycling weekend.
- The River Region: small dykes along the Waal, the Linge and the Lower Rhine.
When are you leaving?
From March to October. In August, the heather on the Veluwe turns purple.
How do you get there?
By train to Arnhem, Nijmegen or Apeldoorn, or by car in about an hour from the Randstad.
