Ibiza; for some it is a party destination, but cyclists who have visited this island will mainly remember the beautiful cycling routes. Ibiza is located in the Mediterranean Sea and is part of the Balearic Islands, a group of islands that belong to Spain. The island is located about 150 kilometers east of the Spanish mainland and close to other Balearic Islands such as Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera. Cycling on Ibiza is becoming increasingly popular, both among cyclists and mountain bikers.
Especially the north of Ibiza is quiet, with lots of green nature, beautiful bays and a clear blue sea. In Ibiza town you can find a bit more hustle and bustle. Wherever you stay; by bike you can discover all the beautiful places of the island. Ibiza is about three times as big as Texel, and about 40 kilometers long from north to south. However, you need not be afraid to ‘play too fast’ with the island. There are numerous beautiful roads that allow you to create endless routes over flatter roads or challenging climbs.
Ibiza is becoming increasingly popular as a cycling destination. The landscape is hilly, and the climbs are usually short. They range from short and steep to longer (up to 6 kilometers) and hilly. It is an ideal destination for cyclists who want to go on a cycling holiday but don’t necessarily want to climb as much as in mountainous areas. Looking for adventure? Go mountain biking in Ibiza. With a mountain bike you can see even more of nature and hidden coves. There are trails for beginners and advanced mountain bikers.
You can cycle all year round in Ibiza, but in the summer months the island is especially popular with tourists looking for sun, beaches and big parties. During that period, accommodation is more expensive and the roads are busier. Therefore, it is advisable to plan a cycling holiday to Ibiza in the autumn or early spring. In the winter, the temperatures are mild, around 10 to 15 degrees. Therefore, Ibiza is also popular with cyclists who want to go on a cycling holiday in the winter.
There are several bike rental companies on Ibiza. Make sure to reserve in time, especially during the high season.
At Bike Ibiza you can not only rent a nice Cannondale or Merida race bike or (e)MTB, but also request a guided tour (available in Dutch). In addition, they can help you plan your cycling holiday on Ibiza.
It is usually not a problem to bring your bike into your hotel room. However, we recommend checking with the hotel in advance. There are also specific bike-friendly hotels such as the Tropic Garden Hotel.
tips for cycling in Ibiza
Around Ibiza on a race bike or gravel bike
Did you know that in one day you can cycle all over Ibiza? In about 140 kilometers and 2000 meters of elevation gain (you can make it as crazy as you want), you can cycle around the island on paved roads. The best roads are slightly off the coast, but by looping the route along charming coastal towns like Portinatx or the bustling Ibiza Town, you can take a lovely break on the beautiful sea. Tip: Take your time cycling the route in two or three days as a bikepacking route. You can also cycle around Ibiza on a gravel bike. That way you’ll discover even more beautiful places, such as hidden coves that you can only reach via unpaved paths. We recommend extending your stay here for several days.
Beautiful climb: from Cala Sant Vicent to Sant Joan de Libritja
This is one of the longest and most beautiful climbs on Ibiza. You start in Cala Sant Vicent, located on the north-east coast of the island. From there, you climb for 6 kilometers to an altitude of 240 meters. With an average gradient of 4%, this climb is not too difficult, but be prepared for some tough stretches up to 12% where your calves will definitely feel the strain. Continue your route from Sant Joan de Libritja with a loop along the beautiful coastal town of Portinatx.
Mountain biking on Ibiza
Ibiza is a crazy mountain biking destination. You can find trails for beginners and advanced riders here. Mountain biking is possible almost everywhere. You can access many great MTB trails from the well-known Ibiza Town or the bustling Sant Antoni de Portmany. You can also enjoy good mountain biking in the northeast of Ibiza. The area is quieter during the more touristy months.
Your Cycling base
Ibiza is small, but each part of the island has its own character:
- Sant Antoni: in the west, with many hotels and the most beautiful sunsets.
- Santa Eulària: on the east coast, quieter and more family-friendly.
- Sant Joan or Sant Miquel: in the green, hilly north, with agrotourism farms in the countryside.
- Ibiza cityFor those who want a city with the port and the old town of Dalt Vila.
Travel tips
Best Travel Time: Avoid the summer months when you don’t want to get caught in the middle of the tourist season. The spring and autumn are much more appealing for cyclists. It’s then perfect weather for cycling and the days are long, allowing you to be on the road all day. You can also cycle well in Ibiza in winter, but bear in mind that this is the low season in Ibiza, which means beach bars and some accommodations may close.
Traffic information: The roads can be busy in the high season (summer). There are many tourists especially around Ibiza town, but there is also a lot of traffic on the roads with tourists making round trips by car or hiking on MTB trails. Quiet roads and trails can be found mainly in the north of the island, and outside the summer months.
Bike rental: There are mainly many mountain bike rental companies on Ibiza, but you can also rent high-quality racing bikes in gravel bikes. Book well in advance so you don’t miss out.
