The Stelvio remains open to cyclists and individual motorized traffic. South Tyrol From now on, organized motorcycling events are prohibited on dozens of mountain roads in protected areas and above 1,600 meters.

The provincial government in Bolzano made the decision on June 19, 2026. The measure applies, among other things, around the Stelvio, Jaufenpas, Timmelsjoch and the route around the Sellamassive. Access roads to nature parks, the Dolomites and other protected areas may also be included.

According to South Tyrol province The rules must reduce noise, emissions, additional traffic and safety risks. They are aligned with the 2030 sustainability strategy and the 2040 climate plan.

Non-competitive events are also subject to the ban.

The ban applies to races with timekeeping, but also to non-competitive gatherings and events that are primarily organized for entertainment purposes. This applies to cars, motorcycles and tractors, regardless of their propulsion system.

The boundary between a prohibited event and a permitted group ride is not yet entirely clear. MotoPlus writes that a recognizable organizational structure may suffice. This would also allow guided tours or club rides with a fixed meeting point to fall under the rules.

Speedweek It adopts an explanation that leaves less room for interpretation. According to that interpretation, commercial organization and payment to an organizer are important characteristics, while rides by friends or associations can be considered private transport. The practice must show where the province sets the limit.

No traffic-free Stelvio

The famous hairpin bends of the Stelvio are therefore still accessible for motorcycles and cars. Individual road users are allowed to continue driving on the affected sections. The ban is aimed solely at organized events. That in itself is very nice. We have often noticed that a motorcycle club is a dangerous fellow road user for a cyclist. Lots of show, unexpected movements and above all nuisance. Especially downhill.

According to the new rules, permit applications that were not completed on June 19 will also be assessed. In the event of violations, the province may impose an administrative fine.

Provincial President Arno Kompatscher said that the ban will not solve the problems on the highways alone. The government is therefore working on additional measures to combat heavy traffic and reckless driving.

The South Tyrol Alpine Association supports the move, but motor organizations and tour operators have criticized it. They fear that even ordinary guided tours will be affected. Some providers say that such trips generate 30 to 40 percent of their summer sales.

So, anyone heading to South Tyrol this summer can still use the passes. Just don’t count on traffic-free roads thanks to this decision. Have you recently driven on the Stelvio or Sellaroute? Share your experience with us about the traffic congestion.
