How about the Bregenzerwald on your gravel bike? This idyllic area in the federal state of Vorarlberg is known for its breathtaking nature and varied cycling landscape. This makes it an ideal destination for gravel bikers (and race cyclists). Whether you’re just starting out with gravel biking or have years of experience, the gravel routes in Bregenzerwald are for everyone. Close to home
At just under 9 car hours from Utrecht you’ll find the Bregenzerwald. The town of ‘Au’ could be considered the gateway to the Bregenzerwald, but in fact every place in that area is perfect for starting your gravel adventure. The Vorarlberg region is well known to many for its winter sports. So be careful: the gravel routes in the Bregenzerwald are anything but flat. That said, there are certainly options for choosing a slightly flatter route, but if you’re expecting routes like those in the Achterhoek or over the Lage Vuursche, you’ll come home with a cold chill.
Faces and undiscovered places
The bonus you do get back is the beautiful views over the Austrian Alps. That’s why you end up choosing ‘alpine gravel’ in the Bregenzerwald and not for a round. Strade Bianche. The gravel in the Alps always provides a different experience. You come to places that are otherwise not visible, or that are more difficult to cycle on a road bike. You may have to walk a little for that, but the reward is worth it. As you can see below, with the view of the Zitterklapfen. That is definitely a different experience than the Sallandse Heuvelrug.
Hotel tip Bregenzerwald
If you are looking for a good bike hotel in the region, you can find it in Schoppernau at the ‘Gämsle Hotel‘. This hotel is a good starting point for cyclists and is also used by the organization RoadBike Holidays as a place to stay. That means safe storage and cleaning facilities for the bikes, a sauna, a weekly bike ride with someone from the hotel, and much more.
