In recent weeks, Serbia has been the talk of the town. Unfortunately, for reasons we would prefer not to see. If you then want to work towards a positive outcome, you had better start writing about the beauty of the country. Because if you want to go cycling in Serbia, you had better take a few days off. The countries in the former Yugoslavia are all magnificent destinations for a cycling holiday. Serbia is one of them. Beautiful nature, friendly people, good food. Belgrade is the capital and manifests itself more prominently as a place to be for a good party. We went looking for beautiful gems in this cycling destination and ended up at the Tara National Park. Basecamp Belgrade
As mentioned earlier, Belgrade is a hotspot in its own right. The city lends itself well to a long weekend, where you can mix culture and sports well together. It is literally the center of the country, where the large Danube River also flows past. Belgrade could be a good starting point for a multi-day trip along the river. Furthermore, you will also find the beautiful Ada Lake in the immediate vicinity of Belgrade, which is also popular with the locals.
National Park Tara
Across the border with Bosnia you find the beautiful Tara National Park. This is a must ride for anyone who goes cycling in Serbia. Around the Zaovine Lake the surroundings are dazzlingly beautiful. Green mountains, with rock walls that plunge so far down into the clear blue water. In the area itself you can find, among other things, the monastery of Raça. This is a monastery with an interesting history. From this monastery you can make a beautiful round trip to the Zaovine Lake, before finally returning via Mokra Gora. It is also absolutely breathtaking for gravel riders here. The mountainous surroundings of the park and the pine trees certainly create mystical conditions in spring, autumn and winter.
National Park Derdap
Another beautiful side of Serbia is if you follow the Danube from Belgrade in an eastern direction. That is in any case a wonderful route, although you cannot follow the Danube all the way. From Ram, near the beautiful fortress, you drive back along the Danube to the Derdap National Park. Here you will find the largest canyon in Europe. The part of Derdap where the canyon of the breakthrough is located is also called the Iron Gate Canyon. This park is on the border with Romania. It is perhaps the most beautiful piece of land. It was added to the UNESCO Geopark list in 2020. Other beautiful places include Miroc and Kucaj. Keep the Danube on your left and you’ll be in for a real treat
