The Kufsteinerland region is somewhat less well known in the Netherlands and Belgium than, for example, Innsbruck, Ötztal and the Worthersee in Carinthia. This region in Tyrol, Just across the border with South Germany, it offers enough for the beginner and experienced road cyclist. You can ride up hills well, but also enjoy the wonderful views along the Inn river. And with six new ‘bed&bike’ accommodations now available, your cycling holiday can’t be beat. Cycling in Kufsteinerland is absolutely fantastic!
Starting point Kufstein
If you travel by night train from the Netherlands to Innsbruck If you go, Kufstein is the first station in Austria you’ll come across. This town is the starting point for several great routes, where you can rack up plenty of elevation gain, but you can also cycle stretches that are relatively flat. For the real enthusiasts, there’s a beautiful 149km round that mostly follows the 2018 World Championships course.
World Championships course
If you think Innsbruck had the World Championships all to itself, you’re wrong. The men’s competition started in Endach, actually a small village/town near Kufstein. From Kufstein, you first have to drive a bit along a more flat road along the river Inn (which is already flowing here). With a beautiful backdrop, including the peaks of the Pendling and the Hohe Salve, it really does give you an Austrian feel.
From the city, you can quickly find the quieter roads that lead from the alpine meadows to Schwoich and Bad Häring. Then you take the quiet side streets of the Inndal and once you reach Hall in Tirol, you turn around via Rattenberg, Schönau and Langkampfen.
In the end, you're 1400 meters higher and you've also ridden (part of) the World Championships course!
Wilder Kaiser & more
Want some cooling off in the summer? Then you can also take a nice route to the Hintersteiner lake. Note that the route there has a really steep climb of about three kilometers. Note that you won’t get below 10% here. If you start out with the wrong gear, you’ll struggle to get up the hill. So make sure you have a good pair of hiking shoes at home. mountain resistance jumps.
What’s really a plus: you have a stunning view of the Wilder Kaiser. You can then take a short round and after a descent via Scheffau, Bocking and finally back to Schwoich, head home. Do you really want to extend it? Then head almost towards Reith near Kitzbuhl (this is really a panoramic route) and when you reach the golf course, turn right. At Brixen im Thale you’ll then head towards the Filzalmsee. That’s also a beautiful, challenging route, where the climb is another 4 kilometers. There are a few stretches of bad road, but at the Filzalmsee you can cool off wonderfully. Another day out. 1800hm, 85km and then up the legs!
Northern route
You can also head north and the German border and get a great ride out of the way. How about a route over the Praschberg/Niederndorfberg? Five kilometers of climbing with stunning views and a few beautiful hairpin bends. Then, if you go back via the Buchberg and via the Walchsee and St. Johann in Tirol, you’ll have just over 80km of pure cycling pleasure.
Kufsteinerland Radmarathon
Through the calendar of our friends from Cycloworld.cc We came out for this wonderful event. With different distances, from 124, 99 and 48km, there is something for everyone. Every year the race is held around the first weekend of September. So there is plenty of time and space to take part in it. All the info can be found in the calendar or directly on the website of the organizer.

The new gem. That was in the title. With the Bed & Bike certification, issued by the ADFC (German ANWB), that is now a reality, as no fewer than six new accommodations have received this certification. The Bed & Bike certification stands for quality accommodations for cyclists. You can at least be sure that you will get the following:

- There is a lockable bicycle storage room
- Dry room for clothes and equipment
- Well-equipped breakfast
- Information about local routes is available
- Basic repair kit is available

How to get there
You can easily drive there by car. In about 10-11 hours you are in Kufstein. As mentioned earlier, you can also take the Nightjet Pick up from Amsterdam or Utrecht, and head straight to your destination. If you don’t mind flying shy, you can fly to Munich and rent a car there.
