For a gravel weekend, you might not immediately think of Salzburgerland. Yet, you’ll find everything here: forests, mountain meadows, emerald lakes, and peaceful trails, with the city of Salzburg as the starting point.
Salzburg
The ‘salt city’ on the Salzach is the birthplace of Mozart and in July and August hosts one of the largest classical music festivals in the world. And after a ride there’s plenty of beer and Apfelstrudel.
The lakes
- Hintersee: via the forests of the Hengstberg to a lake so clear that you can see the bottom.
- Fuschlsee and Wolfgangsee: classic lake route with many triathletes and good bike hotels.
- Postalm: one of the largest mountain pastures in Austria, a beautiful climb with a view.
When are you leaving?
May to September. In the spring and autumn the lakes are most peaceful.
How do you get there?
In an hour and a half you can fly from Schiphol to Salzburg. More sustainable: the NightJet from the Netherlands, or by car.
