From Copenhagen to the Kingdom of Bicycles in Vejle
Denmark has been back on the map since the start of the Tour in 2022. Not only for beautiful race bike routes, but also as a gravel bike destination. The Herregards routes on Funen (Fyn) were nominated as the best cycling route of the year. In Vejle you will find the 'kingdom of Cycling'. In Denmark there is more than enough to discover!
The region
Denmark is a wonderful cycling destination. Don’t be fooled: there are real hills in this Scandinavian country! Both Zealand and Funen as well as Jutland (Jylland) have beautiful hills where you can test your climbing legs.
Copenhagen crowns Amsterdam and Utrecht as the cycling capital. Wide bike paths, lovely bike routes and a cycling culture that you can’t resist. When you leave the city, you’ll quickly find yourself in the greenery and driving through lovely villages.
Sjaelland (Zeeland) is the region with a hilly profile, but it also has a coastline that you can drive all the way along. One tip: the beach hotel at Røsnæs should be on your bucket list right away.
Fyn (Fyn) is the ultimate bike island and part of the region of Syddanmark (Southern Denmark). You will find beautiful routes for both the road bike and the gravel bike.
Nordjylland (North Jutland) is the home of Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard. Of course you can stop by the fish landing where he once worked, but you can also ride his favorite training routes there. It’s a mix of hills and beach routes.
Sydjylland (Southern Jutland) is the perfect destination to test your climbing skills. Around Vejle you will find Denmark’s steepest climb and the birthplace of the Danish Kingdom (hence ‘kingdom of cycling’). If you’re ever there: Legoland is just around the corner!
Highlights
One of the most popular destinations for cycling in Denmark is Funen (Fyn). It’s no coincidence that they call themselves a ‘bike island’. You’ll find beautiful gravel paths there, the Herregardsruten is a prime example of this. But the city of Odense is also a cycling destination, from where you can explore the beautiful region.
What you need to pay attention to
When planning a cycling holiday in Denmark, it is important to take into account the time of year. Denmark has more or less the same climate as the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. So expect a pleasant summer, with occasional showers, but also wet periods in spring and autumn. The winter is to be avoided.
Always remember the local holidays that you need to take into account. Furthermore, Denmark has high traffic fines (from experience) and there is a toll road over the Great Belt Bridge between Funen and Zealand. The toll for a single trip is approximately €37 / £30

In 2022 the Tour de France began in Denmark: a time trial in Copenhagen, a stage from Roskilde over the Storebælt Bridge to Nyborg and a stage from Vejle to Sønderborg. We rode the stages in May, during a press trip. Eight routes, from Copenhagen to Southern Jutland.
