Cycling in Zealand: The Perfect Region for Cyclists

The region of Zealand, the largest island of Denmark, is an excellent destination for cyclists who love varied routes, beautiful coastlines, and perfectly maintained roads. Although Denmark does not have high mountains like the Alps, Zealand offers a fantastic cycling experience with rolling landscapes, challenging hills, and a rich cycling culture.

This island, where the capital Copenhagen is also located, offers a mix of fast asphalt roads, picturesque villages and open landscapes with little traffic. Thanks to the mild climate and excellent cycling infrastructure, you can cycle here all year round. Popular areas such as the southern coastal route, the UNESCO-listed landscape around Stevns Klint, and the hilly roads in the northwest near Odsherred make Sjaelland a surprisingly versatile cycling destination. Also consider Roskilde with the Viking Museum (and the famous rock festival).

Why cycle in Sjaelland?

  • Excellent roads – Well-maintained asphalt, minimal traffic congestion, and bicycle-friendly routes.
  • Varied terrain – From rolling hills and open plains to coastal paths with breathtaking views.
  • Perfect for both beginners and experienced cyclists – Long, flat rides or challenging mountain routes, everything is possible.
  • Strong cycling culture – Denmark is one of the most bike-friendly countries in the world. Additionally, the rise of well-known Danish bike brands and the 2022 Tour de France start are important drivers of the popularity of cycling, cycling, and gravel in Denmark.
  • Good accessibility – Copenhagen as a central hub makes it easy to get here and cycle.

Popular cycling destinations IN SJAELLAND

North Zealand is one of the most beautiful and versatile cycling regions in Denmark. The combination of perfectly maintained roads, varied terrain, and beautiful coastal lines makes it a top destination for both race cyclists and gravel riders. Whether you’re looking for long, rolling roads along the coast, challenging hills, or adventurous gravel routes through expansive forests, North Zealand has it all.

With Copenhagen just an hour away by car, the region is well accessible and offers a perfect mix of nature, history, and peaceful cycling routes. Below are three excellent starting points to explore this region, with routes suitable for both road and gravel bikes.

Helsingør and the Coastal Route: Sloping Roads and Views of Sweden

The coastal route between Helsingør and Copenhagen is one of the most beautiful and popular cycling routes in Denmark. This route, which largely follows the coastline, offers fantastic views of the Sound, with Sweden on the other side. The roads are wide, well-maintained, and perfect for long-distance training.

  • Kongevejen (King's Route) – A historical path through the forests, ideal for gentle uphill training sessions.
  • Hellebæk and Hornbæk Plantation – Lightly rolling roads with alternating sections of forest and coast.
  • Gurre Sø – A beautiful route around Gurre Lake, perfect as a warm-up or an extra loop.

For gravel riders, Hellebæk Plantage is a great place to explore challenging unpaved roads, with singletracks and wide gravel paths winding through the forest.

Gribskov and Tisvilde: The Best Gravel Routes in North Zealand

For those who prefer to get off the paved roads, Gribskov, one of the largest forests in Denmark, offers endless possibilities. This area is located west of Hillerød and has an extensive network of gravel and forest paths that are perfect for both long rides and technical challenges.

Tisvilde Hegn, located on the northwest coast, is another highlight for gravel riders. This former military training ground now has long, wide gravel roads ideal for high speeds, interspersed with more challenging sections through the dunes and forests.

  • Gribskov Rondje – A varied route through the forest, with wide gravel roads and some singletracks.
  • Tisvilde Hegn Loop – A combination of wide paths, fast gravel roads and stretches along the coast.
  • Esrum Sø and the Skovruter – A beautiful route around the largest lake in Sjælland, with plenty of gravel opportunities.

Racers can drive from Hillerød or Helsinge towards the hilly areas of Annisse and Rågeleje, where the roads feature more elevation changes and challenging sections.

Hillerød and the Kings' Route: Cultural Highlights and Quiet Roads

Hillerød is the historical heart of North Zealand and a great base for cyclists who want to combine nature with culture. The famous Frederiksborg Castle serves as the backdrop for some of the region’s most beautiful cycling routes.

  • Kongevejen (King's Route) – A quiet, slightly undulating route that takes you past historic castles and forests.
  • Baking off Brødeskov – One of the few longer climbs in the region, perfect for interval training.
  • Gurre Kirkerunde – A beautiful route through small villages and open landscapes.

For gravel riders, the forest paths around Store Dyrehave are a perfect complement to the paved roads, with beautiful, well-traveled routes that run through centuries-old forests.

Odsherred, located in the northwest of Zealand, is one of the few regions in Denmark where you can truly experience altitude. This area is known for its rolling landscapes, spectacular coastal views, and varied terrain that is perfect for both road cyclists and gravel riders. Thanks to the narrow, winding roads and well-maintained bike paths, Odsherred is a fantastic destination for anyone who wants to combine a sporty ride with beautiful nature.

This area is often called the “Danish Alps” because of the relatively steep hills that you won’t find anywhere else in the country. Whether you want to test your climbing legs on the steep sections around Vejrhøj or are looking for a relaxing route along the fjords and beaches, Odsherred offers something unique for every type of cyclist.

Why cycle in Odsherred?

  • More altitude meters than anywhere else on Sjaelland – Ideal for climbing workouts and interval training.
  • Spectacular views – Drive past fjords, coastal roads and rolling hills.
  • Quiet roads and good asphalt – Little traffic and perfect conditions for long rides.
  • Many gravel opportunities – Extensive networks of unpaved paths through natural areas.

Climbs and Routes in Odsherred

1. Vejrhøj (121 m) – The King of Odsherred

The highest natural hill in Zealand offers one of the most challenging climbs in the region. Although 121 meters may not seem like much, the final hundred meters are steeper than 10%, making this climb perfect for strength training. The view of the fjords and the coast makes the effort doubly worthwhile.

2. Høve Stræde – A Steep Climb in Danish Standards

This short but steep climb is notorious among Danish cyclists. With an incline of up to 12% over a relatively short distance, this is one of the toughest climbs in Sjaelland.

3. Isefjord Round Trip – 100 km of variation

A beautiful long route around the Isefjord, where you cycle alternately through open fields, forests and coastal paths. Perfect for a long endurance training or a relaxing ride with breathtaking views.

For gravel riders, Odsherred offers numerous unpaved roads in nature reserves such as the Geopark Odsherred, where wide gravel paths and technical forest trails come together.

South Zealand is a paradise for cyclists who love long, open roads, peaceful landscapes, and spectacular coastlines. Here you can cycle endlessly through agricultural areas, along fjords, and over autless roads with excellent road surfaces. Moreover, South Zealand offers direct access to one of Denmark’s most iconic structures: the Storebæltsbroen (Storebelt Bridge), an impressive 18 km long bridge that connects Zealand with Funen.

South Zealand is ideal for cyclists who want to ride long distances at a high pace. The minimal elevation differences and wide roads make it perfect for tempo blocks and aerobic training.

Why cycle in South Zealand?

  • Long, quiet roads – Ideal for endurance training and fast rides.
  • Fantastic coastlines – Cycle along the Baltic Sea with spectacular views.
  • Historical attractions – Stevns Klint (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and old castles.
  • The Great Belt Bridge – An impressive technical feat that forms a wonderful backdrop for your bike ride.

Climbs and Routes in South Zealand

1. The Storebælt Bridge – An Iconic Passage

Although the bridge itself is usually not accessible to cyclists (except during special events such as the Storebælt Bridge Run), a ride along the coast towards the bridge is a must for cyclists. The open landscapes and the constant sea wind make this an ideal route for endurance training.

2. Stevns Klint – Cycling along the cliff formations

One of the most beautiful routes in South Zealand runs along Stevns Klint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with spectacular chalk cliffs. The road is hilly and offers beautiful views over the Baltic Sea.

3. Præstø Fjord Rondje – A Long, Quiet Tour

This 120 km route runs along fjords, open plains and through small villages. Ideal for long days on horseback and training at a constant pace.

For gravel riders, South Zealand offers excellent routes in nature reserves such as Møn and Stevns Klint, where you can ride for miles over wide gravel paths with minimal disruption from cars.

Why you should choose Sjaelland over a holiday in the mountains

Although Sjaelland does not have long climbs like the Col du Galibier or Alpe d’Huez, it has unique advantages for cyclists:

  • Constant wind as natural resistance – Cycling in Sjaelland requires a strong foundation and good technique, especially on open coastal roads where the wind plays a serious role.
  • Faster rides on flat roads – Unlike the Alps, where the pace is lower due to the climbing, in Zealand you can cover longer distances at a high speed.
  • Excellent cycling infrastructure – Where the Alps sometimes have narrow and busy mountain roads, the Danish cycling routes are well maintained and car-free.

Which Base is Right for You?

  • Do you want to climb and explore mountainous routes? Choose Odsherred.
  • Are you a fan of the Dutch coast, so why not head to South Zealand?.
  • Do you want to experience the power of the wind and open roads? Plan a route towards the Great Belt Bridge.

Whether you’re looking for a climbing workout in Odsherred, fast blocks to ride in South Zealand or long adventures on gravel roads, cycling in Sjaelland offers endless possibilities. This is the perfect destination for cyclists who love good roads, peaceful nature and challenging routes without the crowds of the famous mountainous cycling areas.
