For the adventurous cyclist who wants to stay on the bike for a little longer and seeks more challenge: the Eddy Merckx Cycling Route has been updated and expanded to a beautiful 70km loop through the beautiful Hageland. Here I share why you have to ride this route—and mind you, bring your sense of curiosity. It’s a shame they didn’t go for an 80km route for the sake of form, even if only because of the anniversary of ‘De Kannibaal.’

Why this route should be your next challenge

  1. Strong: 500m climb without long ascents
Flemish Brabant at its best. You have almost 500 meters of elevation under your wheels, but nowhere do you have a climb that is much longer than a kilometer. In that regard, Flemish Brabant is comparable to the Dutch Limburg region, with the caveat that you still get a bit of gravel on the way.
  2. On the road of the ‘Cannibal’
Departure like Merckx in Meensel-Kiezegem, Here, you will be greeted by a statue and a vibrant mural. This is a must-visit for any cyclist who has any connection to the race. You are literally cycling on the route where Eddy made his first laps. Those who feel the cycling folklore will truly be moved here.
  3. Varied landscape & culture
    • Oudenbos: a beautiful climb.
    • Houwaart's vineyardsAfter climbing the Houwaertsberg, you take the wine fields with you. The wine tradition dating back to the fifth century makes this part of the Hageland a bit ‘Tuscany light’.
    • Castle Horst: imposing medieval building with deep historical roots
  4. Perfect loop
Beautiful asphalt, mostly car-free and only a few unpaved stretches. Driving around feels effortless thanks to clear signs and of course the GPX files you can find here.

Two additional tips

  1. Add extra height with the Marollen Chapel
Make a small detour at Hoegaarden for a steep climb (10‑12 %), followed by a break with views of the Hageland. And if you’re there anyway, a visit to the brewery is a must. Hoegaarden Not a bad choice. Just make sure to lock the bike and take the cleat covers with you.
  2. Lunch at the ‘Wine Bank’ on Houwaartse Berg
Not on the route? Take a detour: the ‘Wijnbank’ – a viewpoint between the vineyards – is perfect for stretching your legs and tasting a local glass of wine. It relaxes the body and the soul.

In short, the Route 70km – 150km
