In this article, we take you on a journey through the Hautes-Alpes and the Vallée des Belleville, two regions renowned for their stunning cycling opportunities. If you want to ride in the French Alps, this is the place to be.

Hautes-Alpes: cycling through mountain villages and majestic passes

The department of Hautes-Alpes is a true paradise for cyclists. Here we find some of the most challenging and scenic routes you can imagine. Cycling in the French Alps is a feast and this region is the icing on the cake. One of the most striking features of this area are the historic mountain villages that adorn the hillsides. Cyclists can enjoy picturesque villages like Briançon, the highest town in Europe, and Embrun, surrounded by crystal-clear lakes and majestic mountains.

Sleeping

We stayed in the Grand Hotel in Saint-Chauffrey, a village that lives on winter sports in the winter and increasingly focuses on cyclists in the summer. In addition to the great restaurant and spa, the hotel offers facilities for the secure storage of bicycles. So you won’t be left wondering about a breakfast guest in cycling attire.

Galibier

One of the most famous climbs in the Hautes-Alpes is the Col du Galibier. This mythical mountain pass is high on the wish list of many cyclists. With its height of 2,642 meters and breathtaking views, climbing the Col du Galibier is a must for any cyclist. Galibier An unforgettable experience. The road winds through alpine meadows and offers ever-changing views as you climb higher.

Lautaret as a warm-up player

Climbing the Galibier is a challenge. But when you finally reach the summit, a sense of triumph overwhelms you as you gaze out over the majestic peaks and realize that you have conquered heights that were once only achieved by the greatest.

We climb the Galibier via the Col du Lautaret. A col that is not only a mountain pass, but also an icon in cycling history. As one of the most visited and ridden cols in the Tour de France, the Lautaret is steeped in legends and stories. The path that winds up is like a timeline of triumphs and defeats, a witness to epic battles between riders and themselves.

From start to the top of the Galibier

The climb begins gradually, enticing with expansive views and fresh mountain air. As you ascend, the air becomes clearer and the surroundings wilder. The final kilometers are the steepest, but the reward is worth it. The summit of the Galibier It offers not only panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, but also a sense of connection with the history of cycling, a feeling that makes every pedal stroke meaningful.

Col d’Izoard

The Col d’Izoard is a gem in the crown of the French Alps, beloved by cyclists for its unique blend of challenge and beauty. This mountain pass, which has been part of a ‘Tour de France’ stage 35 times, stretches over 2360 meters above sea level and offers a spectacular ride through green meadows, winding roads, and hairpin bends. The Izoard is known for its constantly changing landscape, from wooded slopes to rugged alpine meadows, making the climb a visual spectacle. The satisfaction of reaching the top is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, making the Col d’Izoard an unforgettable experience for any cyclist seeking adventure and beauty.

Col du Granon as a dessert

Saint-Chaffrey borders the start of the Col du Granon. The Granon is perhaps less well known than some other legendary cols, but that does not diminish its appeal. In 2022, the Granon was the scene where Jonas Vingeraard secured victory over Tadej Pogacar, and with that, the Tour managed to win.

This Granon is known for its quiet and less-visited character, making it a favorite among cyclists seeking a more peaceful and intimate experience. With its winding path that climbs up through dense forests, the Granon offers a different perspective on cycling in the Alps. As you move upward in solitude and silence, you can fully surrender and enjoy the magic of nature all around you. The reward is not only the sense of accomplishment, but also the satisfaction of discovering a hidden gem within the treasury of the Alps.

Vallee des Belleville: A hidden treasure for cyclists

The Vallée des Belleville, located in the heart of the French Alps, may not be as well known to the wider cycling community, but it offers a hidden treasure for cyclists. This valley is surrounded by some of the most famous ski resorts, such as Les Menuires and Val Thorens, but in the summer months it reveals a different, less-explored side.

We stayed in Les Menuires at the Hotel Lodji, a sophisticated place with luxurious rooms, an extensive spa with views of the surrounding mountains and an excellent cuisine. Just around the corner is the crown jewel of this valley, the Col de la Madeleine.

Col de la Madeleine

With its nearly 20 kilometers of climbing and an average gradient of about 8%, it is a challenge that will appeal to both experienced and adventurous cyclists. Along the way, you will be rewarded with pristine nature, babbling streams, and the tranquility of the mountain landscape.

Anyone who thinks that there is only something to experience on the road in the valley is wrong. (Electric) MTB is increasingly making its way into the valley. Guided by the local legend and guide Rémi Cachera and Didier Collomb, we head towards Val Thorens. After climbing the Tougnète with a view of the Col de la Loze (now famous from the 2023 Tour de France), we descend towards Chez Pépé Nicolas At an altitude of 1400 meters. Where we will eat salmon from the lakes around Val Thorens. The subsequent descent is challenging and breathtaking.

Cycling in the French Alps is an experience that you shouldn’t miss as a cyclist (or mountain biker). Whether you’re looking for the challenge of the legendary cols or want to enjoy peaceful valleys and picturesque villages, this region has something for everyone. The Hautes-Alpes and the Vallée des Belleville promise an unforgettable adventure where you not only push your physical limits, but are also treated to the majestic beauty of nature.
