In the app group, that standard question comes up as soon as someone shares a hotel: “Can the bikes really be brought inside?” We’ve all experienced it. Hotel says bike-friendly, A bike ends up in an open garden shed or a hallway where the cleaning cart is also located. The difference between a label with published criteria and a hotel that puts “bike friendly” on its website itself is huge.

We put the four labels that matter most to us as Dutch and Belgian cyclists side by side, at the points where you book.

Four labels, one comparison

Bett+Bike (Germany, ADFC) · Home Cycling (France, France Vélo Tourisme) · Cyclists Welcome! (The Netherlands, Fietsplatform) · Swiss Bike Hotels (Switzerland, Switzerland Tourism / hotelleriesuisse)

Safe storage

  • Bett+Bike: closed, covered, lockable space for the night. The Sport variant requires a theft-proof space.
  • Home Cycling: secure bicycle parking; for accommodations, a closed, secure area on the ground floor.
  • Cyclists Welcome!: closed bicycle storage at the accommodation.
  • Swiss Bike Hotels: Bike garage or lockable bicycle storage area.
  • Only “bike friendly” on the hotel website: no defined standard. Could be anything.

Repair supplies

  • Bett+BikeBasic repair kit plus contact with a bike workshop. Sport adds special tools and a service corner.
  • Home Cycling: repair kit (tire patch materials, standard wrenches, lubricant, tire pump) or referral to the nearest repair shop.
  • Cyclists Welcome!: tire patch kit, bike pump and first aid kit.
  • Swiss Bike HotelsWorkshop or repair service, tools available or nearby.

Washing and drying clothes

  • Bett+Bike: drying room for clothes and equipment. Sport also requires a bicycle washroom.
  • Home Cycling: washing machine or sink plus dryer or drying room.
  • Cyclists Welcome!: dryer or clothes rack for wet clothes.
  • Swiss Bike Hotels: laundry room; at some partners also laundry service.

Breakfast or eating

  • Bett+Bike: full breakfast or cooking facilities are a minimum requirement.
  • Home CyclingBreakfast is not mandatory, but if offered it should be adjusted to the energy needs of cyclists. Restaurants should be open in the afternoon.
  • Cyclists Welcome!: no breakfast minimum in the criteria.
  • Swiss Bike Hotels: “vitality cuisine”, bike-friendly meals, half-board or full board (or restaurant nearby).

Route information and local knowledge

  • Bett+BikeRegional tourist bike information is mandatory; Sport adds sports-specific maps, GPS equipment and daily weather information.
  • Home Cycling: route guidance, knowledge of local cycling routes, and information about the best route to take.
  • Cyclists Welcome!: no formal requirement in the published criteria, but visibility on route planners and in guides.
  • Swiss Bike Hotels: local travel tips, maps and GPS routes.

Charging e-bikes

  • Bett+Bike: charging point is a basic criterion (unless regulations prevent it).
  • Home CyclingCharging the e-bike battery and charging the phone/GPS are core services.
  • Cyclists Welcome!: Charging point for e-bikes mandatory.
  • Swiss Bike Hotels: not explicitly mentioned in the published criteria.

Control and validity

  • Bett+Bike: On-site inspection by trained auditors, certificate valid for 3 years.
  • Home Cycling: strict selection and regular control, label period of 3 years.
  • Cyclists Welcome!Annual participation (January–December), managed by Fietsplatform.
  • Swiss Bike Hotelsqualification through hotelleriesuisse and Switzerland Tourism, with a TrustYou-scored threshold.

Which label goes with which trip?

Bett+Bike This offers the clearest minimum guarantee. Full breakfast, enclosed storage, drying room, repair kit, route knowledge, charging of the e-bike, and all this is checked with a physical inspection. If you book a Bett+Bike address in Germany, you actually no longer need to send a confirmation email (that saves you DMing the reception again ;)).

Of Sport-variant is extra interesting for race bike riders and gravel riders: special tools, a bike wash, sports-specific maps and daily weather reports.

Home Cycling is the widest label in the range. More than 9,000 certified companies in France, and in addition to hotels, there is also bike rental, restaurants, tourist agencies, and attractions. For a multi-day stay in France, where logistics must be coordinated throughout the day, this ecosystem is convenient.

Cyclists Welcome! Works as a light, fast filter for overnight stays along LF routes and node networks in the Netherlands. About 900 companies participate. The threshold is lower than with Bett+Bike, but the basics are in place: closed parking, tire patch kit, pump, and e-bike charging. For a weekend of node stops in your own country, exactly what you need.

Swiss Bike Hotels They are closer to a premium accommodation segment than to a simple check-off system. Bikegarage, workshop, vitality cuisine, route advice. Ideal for a comfort-oriented cycling holiday in Switzerland, less like a purely checklist label.

And what if there is no label at all?

Many excellent small hotels, B&Bs and guest houses have no official label. Sometimes because of costs (participation ranges from €67 per year with Fietsers Welkom! to €200 per three years with Bett+Bike or Accueil Vélo), sometimes because they are not on the radar. That does not necessarily make them less suitable. But without a label, there is no external control, and “bike friendly” on a hotel website means exactly the same as the owner’s own understanding of it.

Of course we have our own cycling destination approved label.

In that case: send a message and ask specifically about closed parking facilities, cooking facilities and breakfast times. According to the ADFC criteria For Bett+Bike, a closed, covered, lockable space is the minimum. That is a good benchmark for any hotel, whether it is labeled as such or not.

Do you know of a hotel without a label that still has the basics perfectly in order? We would love to hear from you!
