Emilia-Romagna is one of the largest regions in Italia. Anyone who says Emilia-Romagna actually mentions Marco Pantani's name in the same breath. Il Elefantino (or sometimes Il Pirata, after the bandana on his head) lives here as if he never left us. This is evident once again during the official press conference of the Tour de France start 2024. Pantani's name drops and spontaneous applause ensues. Not surprising when you know that he was so much more for Italy, cycling and especially in combination with the Tour. It is therefore also the perfect tribute to the slender climber with the bald head that the very first Grande Partenza takes place in Emilia Romagna. We were invited to the European Media Cycling Contest in Cesenatico. We enjoyed ourselves and we think these are the 5 reasons to visit Emilia-Romagna in 2024.
The Tour de France 2024
On 29 June 2024, the riders will start in Tuscany (yes, definitely) but finish the first stage in Rimini, on the Adriatic coast. This seaside resort, where many young people have been holidaying for years, is keen to build more sustainable tourism. The Tour de France is a nice springboard, to turn over 750,000 annual cycling tourists into even more. In Stage two, we will start to see many odes to Pantani. From Cesenatico, via Montecino and Gallisterna, the riders ride towards Bologna. Here they ride part of the 2020 World Cup around Imola. These two stages alone provide enough inspiration for you as an enthusiastic cyclist to come here. And if you can catch a glimpse of the pros at the same time, that's a double bonus.
Diverse landscape
The diversity of the landscape is unprecedented: Emilia-Romagna is very diverse. Not only do you have the vast Adriatic coast (which, in terms of views, is somewhat blocked by the many private beaches, a culture thingy. You'll also find rolling hills, vineyards and beautiful medieval towns and villages. From the coast, you can already see the mountain range of the Apennines. Whether you prefer a coffee run, or go for a serious climbing holiday, Emilia-Romagna has it. Not to mention the opportunity to tick off city-state San Marino. San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world. A nice list to tick off once. Maybe not the most beautiful place, but it's still nice to be able to say you've been there. A visit to Cesenatico is also a must. It is a town with a striking boulevard, but above all a beautiful port, which, according to tradition, was designed by Leonardo himself.

Emilia Romagna organises a trio of not-to-be-missed GranFondo/Cyclosportive events suitable for cyclists of all levels:
- Nove Colli: If you had ever wanted to ride a GranFondo, the Nove Colli is the mother of all GranFondos. The oldest of its kind goes over (you guessed it) nine hills. The course takes you past charming villages, challenging climbs and the beautiful Adriatic coast. Bicycle-friendly
Ok, just a disclaimer. I say bicycle-friendly, but that's not quite the billiard cloth we're used to in the Netherlands. Bike-friendly mainly means that cycling is alive and well here. Pantani lives, but that is obvious by now. There is a huge network of cycle paths along the waterfront and dedicated cycle lanes inland as well. These then also stop abruptly, but this way you can often avoid the madness of Italian traffic. In total, there are 1285 kilometres of cycle lanes in the region. Head inland and the traffic disappears like snow in the sun. Extra tip: are you going to Ferrara? If so, you might find the most bikes in Italy there. The city is the 'cycling capital of Italy' and also throws high marks Europe.
