Baden-Württemberg
The state of Baden-Württemberg is located in the south of Germany. In terms of area and population it is the third largest state in Germany. The most famous city in the region is Stuttgart, and with its location on Lake Constance there is a great deal of variety when it comes to cycling. Around Student city of Freiburg You can already reach the mountains of the Black Forest. You can even make the short trip to the Vosges in France, because they are just a stone’s throw away. Think of climbing the Kandel, where you can climb for 12 kilometers at an average of almost 8%. The Feldberg is perhaps the most enjoyable climb. 16 kilometers at an average of 5.4%. Be careful though, because at the end it peaks to 16%(!)
Cycling through Germany
Ever since I was young, I have had a thing for topography. Even before I was 10, I knew the entire map of the Netherlands by heart, and after my parents gave me a globe for my 12th birthday… I was sold. I am convinced that the passion you feel for something as a child stays with you. Forever. How do I see that in myself? I notice that I look very often at the metadata on Instagram. Especially the location tags that are added; I really get excited about them. I regularly click on them. Just to see them on the map. The same goes for Markus. How he shows off the neighborhood where he lives and drives is really fantastic. It makes you happy.
Many times I clicked on the location pin to see where he was driving. Badfen-Württemberg. After my first stop in Hesse, it was only logical that I would drive on to this southern state to meet him in person. Because over the past two years we had already chatted a lot via Instagram, but not face-to-face. I was 100% sure that this was a cool guy.
Heilbronn
We meet in a small village just northwest of Heilbronn. First, of course, we have to have a coffee, and without realizing it, we are already an hour into our journey. The bike is patiently waiting for us. Markus has already prepared a beautiful route that will take us 130 kilometers through the rolling, mountainous landscape. In this route, we stop at the Königstuhl. This is the viewing point overlooking the university city of Heidelberg. The view here is stunning, and the descent to our coffee stop in the city is lightning fast. The climb alone is a bucket list item.
We had already picked up David on the way, whom we both know through Instagram. He also comes from this region, and together we drive through the hilly surroundings. After two more beautiful, quiet climbs, we’re even more eager for coffee and cake. The surroundings are stunning. You mainly drive through the Heuchelberg Nature Park here, which is why it’s so beautiful.
The last part of our route
Eventually, David and I separate and we drive back to Markus’ house. This 30-kilometer stretch is quite peaceful and eventually helps make a pasta salad dinner. I was so happy that I moved to this area too.
