Shimano has announced a recall for 11-speed HOLLOWTECH II road cranksets manufactured between June 1, 2012 and June 30, 2019, due to a possible issue with the release of some of the crank connections. After already announcing a recall in the US and Canada last week, the announcement now extends to other parts of the world, including the Benelux region. Exact numbers are not known but it would involve nearly 2.8 million (!) cranksets.
Cranksets produced between June 1, 2012 and June 30, 2019
The recall applies to 11-speed Hollowtech II cranksets manufactured between June 1, 2012 and June 30, 2019, for Dura-Ace and Ultegra groupsets, namely the following sets:
- Ultegra FC-6800,
- Ultegra FC-R8000,
- Dura-Ace FC-9000,
- Dura-Ace, FC-R9100
- Dura-Ace FR-R9100-P
Owners of a group set with the relevant cranksets can contact a Shimano Service Center or a Shimano Dealer who will perform an inspection on the crankset to check for the above-mentioned defect. Only in case of a defect will the crankset be replaced. This therefore also does not constitute a replacement service but a voluntary inspection.
Should my crankset be checked?
To find out if your crankset needs to be checked, Shimano has outlined a step-by-step process. It’s basically as follows:
- Check the model number. You do this on the crank, as shown below in the picture.
- Does your model number fall within the previously mentioned numbers?
- If so, check the production code.
- The following production codes are from before July 1, 2019: KF, KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK, KL, LA, LB, LC, LD, LE, LF, LG, LH, LI, LJ, LK, LL, MA, MB, MC, MD, ME, MF, MG, MH, MI, MJ, MK, ML, NA, NB, NC, ND, NE, NF, NG, NH, NI, NJ, NK, NL, OA, OB, OC, OD, OE, OF, OG, OH, OI, OJ, OK, OL, PA, PB, PC, PD, PE, PF, PG, PH, PI, PJ, PK, PL, QA, QB, QC, QD, QE, QF, QG, QH, QI, QJ, QK, QL, RA, RB, RC, RD, RE, RF.
- Do you have a model number with one of the above production codes? Then go to your nearest dealer.
