An Unforgettable Day with Visma-Lease-a-Bike in Sierra Nevada
When looking for the ideal training location for a professional cycling team, sunny Spanish coastal resorts, steep Pyrenean passes or Tuscan hills might come to mind. But this year, the Visma-Lease-a-Bike team chose a completely different setting: the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada. I got the chance to visit their training camp and spend a day cycling in this breathtaking mountain range. The contrast between the sunny weather at the foot of the mountain and the snow-capped peaks is truly impressive. If you are considering an altitude training camp, this experience is highly recommended.
Wintering in Andalusia: don't forget your bike!
For a while, there was doubt whether the road bike should come with me to Cortes de la Frontera because after all, this was supposed to be a workation and not a cycling holiday in Andalusia, right? But from the moment I passed Seville and drove into the Andalusian mountainous landscape, I knew cycling was going to have a prominent place in my work week. Text [...]

Arima Hotel in San Sebastian: cycling destination approved
Bike hotels are not infrequently functionally equipped places. Everything is there, but if you're honest, you wouldn't book that hotel with your partner. Unless you are both bike crazy, but even then. In the Basque Country, they have found something to that. The beautiful Arima Hotel & Spa, on the south side of San Sebastian, [...]
Grand Depart Basque Country - Stage 3 at Haimar's doorstep
The coast of the Basque country is rugged, green and hilly. Small towns and villages are interspersed with green strips that continuously undulate up and down. When the riders of the men's peloton ride stage 3 of the Grand Depart on Monday 3 July 2023, they will still be gulping. Not because of the beauty, or because of [...]
Cycling in Madrid: unknown does not make unloved!
If you want to cycle in Spain, there are regions that capture your imagination more than Madrid. Royal cycling in [...]
Gravel biking in Tarifa, Andalusia: a gravel haven at the end of the world
Tarifa, located at the southernmost tip of Europe, is best known as the Mecca for kite- and windsurfers. But what many people do not know is that Tarifa is also heaven on earth for gravel bikers. In 2023, the Basque Country will be completely dominated by the Tour de France. Earlier you could see the preview of stage one on this medium. Today [...]
Round the Basque Country: in the wake of the Grand Depart Euskadi - part 1
A rugged coastline, interspersed with idyllic towns and a deserted beach. Sounds of the 'txalaparta' instead of the more rhythmic Flamenco. A cheerful ¡Aupa! to all the other cyclists you meet. Basque Country is really a different kind of Spain from what you are used to. You won't find tapas here. Pintxos are the 'snack of choice'. Want to [...]
