Denmark has been right back on the map since the Tour start in 2022. Not only for beautiful road bike routes, but also as a gravel bike destination. The Herregardsruten on Funen (Fyn) was nominated as cycling route of the year. In Vejle, you will find the 'kingdom of Cycling'. There is more than enough to discover in Denmark!

The region

Denmark is a wonderful cycling destination. Don't be fooled: there are real hills in this Scandinavian country! Both Sjaelland, Funen and also Jylland (Jutland) have beautiful hills, where you can test your climber's legs.

Copenhagen rivals Amsterdam and Utrecht as cycling capitals. Wide cycle paths, good through-cycling routes and a cycling culture that is second to none. If you leave the city, you are soon in the green and ride through lovely villages.

Sjaelland (Zealand) is the region with a hilly profile, but also a coastline you can drive all the way down. Here's a tip: the beach hotel at Røsnæs can be put on your bucket list right away.

Funen (Fyn) is the bike island and part of the region of Syddanmark (southern Denmark). You will find beautiful routes for both road and gravel bikes.

Nordjylland (North Jutland) is home to Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard. Of course, you can visit the fish auction where he once worked, but you can also ride his favourite training routes. It is an alternation of hills and beach routes.

Sydjylland (southern Jutland) is the destination to test your climber's legs. Around Vejle you'll find Denmark's steepest climb and you'll also find the origin of the Danish kingdom (hence 'kingdom of cycling'). While you're there: Legoland is around the corner!

Highlights

One of the most popular destinations for cycling in Denmark is Funen (Fyn). That they have named themselves 'bike island' is no coincidence. You will find beautiful gravel paths there, the Herregardsruten being one example. But the city of Odense is also a cycling destination, from where you can explore the beautiful region.

What to watch out for

When planning a cycling holiday in Denmark, it is important to consider the time of year. Denmark has more or less the same climate as the Netherlands and the UK. So count on a nice summer, with occasional showers, as well as wet periods in spring and autumn. Winter is to be skipped.

Also, always remember the local public holidays to take into account. Furthermore, Denmark has high traffic fines (from experience) and there is a toll road across the Great Belt Bridge between Funen and Sjaelland. The one-way toll is around €37 / £30

How do I get there

Denmark is very easily accessible. You have the choice of several optiers

Car: Less than a day's drive by car and you are in most Danish regions. Syddanmark (southern Denmark) is the closest. Sønderborg is less than 7 hours' drive from Utrecht. From there, you can head towards the island of Funen (Fyn) via Vejle, which is a wonderful cycling destination. If you want to continue towards Sjaelland (Zealand) or Copenhagen, you'll have to cross the Great Belt Bridge (toll) and then you're about 12 hours away.

Train: Although Denmark is very close, the train connection to this Scandinavian country is not yet optimal. That said, the travel time from, say, Utrecht Central Station to Odense (on Funen) is just over 10 hours by train. You then have to change trains three times, which is manageable, but at the risk of missing your train. The journey goes via Hanover and Hamburg. From Hamburg, there is a direct train to Copenhagen. You can also get off along the way in Kolding (for the Vejle region) and so in Odense for Funen (Fyn).

Aeroplane: Should you face a longer car or train journey, you can opt for the plane. Both Billund (near Legoland) and Copenhagen have good connections. Several times a day, an airbus heads to Denmark. Flight time is just over an hour. From there, Denmark is at your feet.
