When the 2017 men's Tour de France had its 'Grand Depart' in Düsseldorf, it came down with rain. Not necessarily a good advertisement for the city and its surroundings. Yet Düsseldorf a wonderful base for a nice weekend on a road bike or gravel bike. Indeed, if you want to ride beautiful routes in the area and really immerse yourself in cycling culture, a visit combined with the Cyclingworld Europe event in Düsseldorf a must-do. We give you a few fun starters to spend a weekend cycling in Düsseldorf and experience cycling in the meantime.
Racing along the waterfront
Whoever says Düsseldorf naturally says the Rhine. The river defines the city's image. The (rebuilt) city centre lies on the banks of the Rhine and in summer it is great to be there. Not just by bike, by the way, because the waterside terraces, with the freight traffic on the water provide more than enough entertainment for a day or weekend.
Schicke Mütze x Cyclingworld
From the Areal Böhler, a beautiful road cycling route departs westwards. In 60 kilometres, you will discover some beautiful stretches just outside the city. The rolling hills, farm roads and the stretch along the Rhine provide
Baldeneysee
If you do grab a road bike, you can do a very nice stretch along the Rhine. Choose the west bank though, otherwise you'll be in the thick of the city. The advantage of this region is that you have a lot of undulation, so on your route you will quickly reach a few hundred altimeters in less than 60 kilometres of cycling. You can also explore the eastern side of Düsseldorf and head towards the Baldeneysee. Not bad if you ask us.
Gravelheaven
That Germany is a gravel heaven should no longer be a secret. For years, our eastern neighbours have embraced the gravelen and at The Gravel Collective, they add to that. This initiative organises several gravel rides around Cyclingworld and with 'The Gravel Club' they also have a real lounge at the event. That gravel around Düsseldorf offers many possibilities can be seen in the routes ridden during the event. Whether you catch an 'afterwork ride' or an 'early bird ride'. In 40 to 50 kilometres you will be presented with beautiful gravel tracks.
From the bicycle
The city has a lot to offer. The Königsallee, called 'the Kö' for short, is one of Germany's chicest shopping streets. The famous couturiers have their place there, but of course you can just have a look around. The old centre, which also has its traces of the war is worth a visit. There is also a strong Japanese link and Little Tokyo Therefore, you can't miss it either.
The city's architecture is also worth a look. You can of course view all that from the great Rheinturm, which is inseparable from Düsseldorf's cityscape. The city also has a fine selection of 'urban art'. You can discover these during one of the Urban Art Rides organised from the Areal Böhler.
