Coffee and cycling are a perfect combination. There are plenty of hashtags on Instagram that refer to this. But in any case, a nice espresso is a good start for your ride. In the Netherlands there are quite a few cycling cafes, These are spread across the country, so you can start and end your route wherever you want. We’ve put together a list of some of them, with a fun route to get some inspiration. Here are our tips for the best bike cafés in the Netherlands to make your ride even more enjoyable. Happy riding!
The Prologue – Amerongen
If there is one cycling café in the Netherlands, it is De Proloog in Amerongen. It is not for nothing that this is a Cycling Destination Approved Location. Located at the bottom of the famous Amerongen Hill, this is a stopover for cyclists and those who want a nice cup of coffee. From the café you can ride the entire Utrecht Hills area, including the Defensieweg, but also the Ruiterberg-Hoogstraat combination. As mentioned, the coffee is delicious and for the connoisseur, you can have a good lunch and a drink here. A cold (0.0-) beer at the end is also no problem.
Cyclist – Eindhoven
Brabant is a very large cycling province. In fact, it is the second largest province after Gelderland and the range of routes is legion. From Eindhoven you can go almost anywhere. Cyklist is the perfect starting point. Everywhere you see cycling paraphernalia; the coffee and apple pie are delicious and the lunch menu is also delicious. The last time we were there we had a nice combo of soup with a sandwich. The burgers are also good and when combined with the Kwaremont beer you have the perfect combination. So, enjoy it, if you ask us. Besides a great atmosphere, there are also many events that are organized. It’s always nice to participate in them.
Berc Bike – Zeddam
Zeddam is known for the local cross-country race. That competition has now disappeared from the calendar. Here, on the border with Germany, you will find the perfect spot to explore the gravel and mountain bike trails in the area. Explorer Nynke has already been there once. Berkelland and Berc Bike It was already a favorite back then. What sets this location apart from some of the other bike cafés is the ability to rent bicycles there. Both MTB and gravel bikes are available. An extra fun fact is the presence of the BERC beer. Additionally, this bike café has its own bike studio where you can choose your dream bike (or have it repaired quickly). So great.
Fixed Gear Coffee – Valkenburg
The original Fixed Gear! Because by now this chain has opened a second branch in Maastricht. However, the original is located in Valkenburg, at the bottom of the Cauberg. A perfect start to your ride. Shivani and Brian are the happy owners of this must-do coffee stop in Valkenburg. Not only will you find delicious coffee there, the presence of Brian and Shivani is a real plus.
Klasbak – Zuidlaren
In the north of the Netherlands you’ll find some gems when it comes to cycling. Klassbak in Zuidlaren is one of them. On the Brink in this large town you’ll find a delicious coffee shop where you can also get a nice piece of homemade cake or cookie. The coffee is from the Velokoffie brand, not by chance their own brand. From here you can see Drenthe stretching out before you. Mark is a nice guy who knows a lot about everything and the café is full of cycling. From time to time there are also rides and events. We’re a fan of this Drenthe gem.
Spaak – Groningen
Or is Martijn also there? A familiar question at Spaak in Groningen. Take a look for yourself; often the answer is yes. Spaak is the place to be in Groningen. In the city, with a small terrace and a pretty big shop, this is the bike hotspot for the city and its surroundings. The advantage of Spaak is that you can bring your bike in for maintenance and that there is a wide range of bike accessories. Not for nothing is Spaak also a Shimano Service Center. Handy when something goes wrong with your bike. Besides the coffee and cake, there is also a nice lunch menu. Enjoy it!
Bike club De Meet – Deventer
Cycling in Deventer is a whole different matter! That must have been what Nick of Fietslokaal De Meet also thought. Because there was already plenty of cake, but no bike café in Deventer yet, which you could also call the gateway to Overijssel. From here, you can head both to the Sallandse Heuvelrug, along the IJssel, and also towards the beautiful Achterhoek. Technically speaking, that’s Gelderland, but who’s going to argue with that? Back to De Meet. Not only delicious coffee and cake await you. There’s also a modest lunch menu and the bike café has a shop with repair stations. The event calendar is more than full, with various (social) rides, workshops, and inspiration evenings.
[Un]paved – Eys
My own memories of Eys are mainly the Eyserhalte and the Eyserbosweg. Little tips for when you’re planning a nice route near Unpaved: you just have to go up the hill to ride the Amstel Gold Race in the footsteps of great riders and women. If you’re riding one of the AGR loops, you can even combine Unpaved and Fixed Gear Coffee. The coffee at [un]paved (the official spelling) is of high quality (Il Magistrale) and the pastries are (almost) all local. You’ll find a good ‘raviteau’ here. Looking for a cool route? Download one from the site. There are also social rides or you can book guided tours. It’s all about the local scene here. Didn’t I already say that they also have coffee? You can at least store your bike safely inside!
Lola Bikes & Coffee – The Hague
The capital city isn’t necessarily known as a biking paradise. The range of routes is relatively limited, and on a Sunday afternoon you definitely want to avoid the dunes, even if it’s just because of the many other cyclists and gravel bikers. Still, Lola Bikes & Coffee in the city center is a delightful coffee shop, where you can also have a good lunch and where you can also buy some cycling gear. There’s even a workshop.
Coppi – Rotterdam
Whether this was the first coffee house with a bike theme, I don’t know. Still, Coppi in Rotterdam is a place to go right away if you’re looking for a cool bike café. Admittedly, you won’t stumble across the cycling paraphernalia, but you can have your bike fixed and with the name Coppi you’re quickly on your way. The combination with Fausto in Schoonhoven creates a nice route from Fausto -> Coppi -> Fausto or vice versa. All in all, the coffee here is of excellent quality. The location under the arches is at least unique. A nice place to start if you live in Rotterdam and the surrounding area.
Vanmark – Joure
Friesland and cycling, what more could you want? At VanMark in Joure, you will definitely find what you are looking for. Although it is temporarily closed due to a major renovation as of October 1, 2023, this remains the tip for A bike ride in Friesland And the surroundings. Owner Mark is a passionate entrepreneur who not only serves coffee, but also brews it. Vanmark is a place for social rides, for an ‘after ride coffee’, and rightly the start of your Friesche cycling adventure. Also during the Elfstedentocht You might stop in Joure for a fresh cup of coffee from Mark.
