Coffee and cycling are a golden combination. There are plenty of hashtags on instagram with coffee and bikes that point to that. But anyway, a nice espresso before your ride is a good start. In the Netherlands, there are quite a few cycling cafes, scattered around the country where you can very well start (and end) your itinerary. We have listed some of them, with a nice route to get some inspiration. Read our tips for the nicest cycling pubs in the Netherlands to street your ride here. Happy riding!
The Prologue - Amerongen
If there is one cycling pub in the Netherlands, it is De Proloog in Amerongen. Not for nothing is this a Cycling Destination Approved Location. Located at the bottom of the famous Amerongse Berg, this is a stopping point for cyclists and for people who want a nice cup of coffee. From the café you can ride the entire Utrechtse Heuvelrug, including the Defensieweg, but also the Ruiterberg-Hoogstraat combination. As mentioned, the coffee is delicious and for the enthusiast, you can have a good lunch and drinks there. A cold (0.0) beer at the end is no punishment either.
Cyklist - Eindhoven
Brabant is a very big cycling province. Indeed, it is the second largest province after Gelderland and the range of routes is legion. From Eindhoven, you can go in just about any direction. As a base, Cyklist is the perfect start. You'll see cycling paraphernalia everywhere, the coffee and apple pie are delicious and the lunch menu is great too. Last time we were there, we took a tasty combo of soup with a sandwich. The burgers are good too and in combination with the Kwaremont beer, you've got the right combo. So enjoy, if you ask us. Besides a top atmosphere, there are also many events being organised. Always fun to take part in.
Berc Bike - Zeddam
Zeddam is known for its local cross-country race. Meanwhile, that race has disappeared from the calendar. On the border with Germany, you'll find the hotspot to explore the gravel trails and road bike routes in the area. Explorer Nynke was already on the road in the Berkelland and Berc Bike was also a favourite then. What sets this venue apart from some other cycling cafes is the possibility of renting bikes there. Both MTB and gravel bikes are available. An extra fun fact is the presence of its own BERC beer. In addition, this cycling café has its own bike studio where you can pick out your dream bike (or get some quick fixes). Top so.
Fixed Gear Coffee - Valkenburg
The original Fixed Gear! Because now this chain has a second branch in Maastricht. The original, however, is in Valkenburg, at the bottom of the Cauberg. A perfect start to your ride. Shivani and Brian are the happy owners of this must-do coffee stop in Valkenburg. Not only will you find delicious coffee, the presence of Brian and Shivani is a downright plus.
Klasbak - Zuidlaren
In the north of the Netherlands, you will find some gems when it comes to cycling. Klasbak in Zuidlaren is one such gem. On the Brink in this large village, you will find a delicious coffee shop, where you can also get a nice piece of homemade cake or biscuit. The coffee is from the brand Velokoffie, not coincidentally his own brand. From here, Drenthe is at your feet. Mark is a nice guy who knows a bit about everything and the café breathes cycling. Every now and then there are also rides and events. We are fans of this Drenthe topper.
Spaak - Groningen
Whether Martijn is also there? A familiar question at Spaak in Groningen. Take a look inside yourself, is then often the answer. Spaak is the place to be in Groningen. In town, with a small terrace and a rather large shop, this is the cycling hotspot of the city and surrounding area. The advantage of Spaak is that you can also bring your bike for maintenance and there is a wide range of cycling gear. Not for nothing is Spaak also a Shimano Service Centre. Very handy if something does go wrong with your cart. Besides coffee and cake, there is also a nice lunch menu. So enjoy!
Fietslokaal De Meet - Deventer
Cycling in Deventer, that's different cake! Nick from Fietslokaal De Meet must have thought so too. Because there was already plenty of cake, but no bicycle café in Deventer, which you could also call the gateway to Overijssel. After all, from here you can both head towards the Sallandse Heuvelrug, along the IJssel and also towards the beautiful Achterhoek. Technically, that would be Gelderland, but well, who cares. Back to The Meet. Not only delicious coffee and cake await you. There is also a modest lunch menu and the bike shop has a shop with repair stations. The event calendar is more than well-stocked, with various (social) rides, workshops and inspiration evenings.
[Un]paved - Eys
My own memories of Eys are mainly the Eyserhalte and the Eyserbosweg. Little tips for if you are going to make a nice route near Unpaved, you only have to go up to ride the Amstel Gold Race in the footsteps of great riders. If you ride one of the AGR loops, you can even combine Unpaved and Fixed Gear Coffee. The coffee at [un]paved (official spelling) is of a high standard (Il Magistrale) and the baked goods are (almost) all local too. A good 'raviteau' can be found here. Looking for a cool route? Then download one via the site. There are also social rides or you can book guided tours. So they cater for all markets. Did I mention they also have coffee? At least you can safely store your bike inside!
Lola Bikes & Coffee - The Hague
The court city is not necessarily known as a cycling mecca. The choice of routes is relatively limited and especially on a Sunday afternoon you want to avoid the dunes, if only because of the many other cyclists and gravel bikers. Still, Lola Bikes & Coffee in the city centre is a lovely coffee shop, where you can have a good lunch as well as buy some cycling gear. There is even a workshop.
Coppi - Rotterdam
Whether this was the first bike-themed coffee house, I don't know. Still, Coppi in Rotterdam is a place to go straight away if you're looking for a cool bike cafe. Granted, you won't stumble over the cycling paraphernalia there, but you can get your bike fixed and with the name Coppi, you'll soon be well on your way. The combination with Fausto in Schoonhoven, makes for a fun route from Fausto -> Coppi -> Fausto or vice versa. All in all, the coffees here are of excellent quality. The location under the hofbogen can be called unique, to say the least. Fine place to start if you live in Rotterdam and its surroundings.
Vanmark - Joure
Friesland and cycling, what more could you want? At VanMark in Joure, you will definitely get your money's worth. Although temporarily closed on 1 October 2023 due to a major renovation, this remains the tip for A bike ride Friesland and surrounding areas. Owner Mark is a passionate entrepreneur who not only serves coffee, but also roasts coffee. Vanmark is a place for social rides, for an 'after ride coffee' and justifiably the start of your Frisian cycling adventure. Also during the Elfstedentocht you will be able to stop in Joure for a fresh cup of coffee from Mark.
