For CyclingDestination, Manon got the chance to explore the MTB package on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. In cooperation with hotel Kontakt der Kontinenten, we spent two days immersed in all the beauty of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Hotel Kontakt der Kontinten is the base, just outside Soesterberg. It is a unique location, you experience it as soon as you arrive. Besides the hotel, the grounds also house the former Sint Jan Mission House and Cenakel Monastery. The original occupants of these buildings were missionaries and nuns. This is a very good starting point for mountain biking on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

Mountain bike package Utrechtse Heuvelrug
The mountain bike package was booked for us. On the day of arrival, we are warmly welcomed at the hotel reception. After we have exchanged some details, it is time to check out the hotel room. The room is very spacious, bright and luxuriously furnished. It can rightly be called a picture.
Getting ready to go
Then it's time to explore the area. We change clothes and get ready to go. The package also includes rented mountain bikes from TCS bikes from Soesterberg. These are already ready to start in the hotel's secure bike shed. Even if you come with your own bike, you can store it safely. Within three kilometres from the hotel, you are already cycling with your mountain bike on the first singletracks. For our route, we choose the latest mountain bike route around Soest. The total length of the route is 23 kilometres. The route is very varied, containing both technical elements and long forest paths. You meander beautifully through the greenery around Soest and Soesterberg. Just remember to always take a MTB vignette needed.
Also by gravel bike on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug
Because of the many greenery and forest paths, the route can also be ridden on a gravel bike. This route is actually an all-rounder's friend. This MTB route is suitable for both beginners and more experienced cyclists. This is the MTB route that lies on the edge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. After the Veluwe, the Utrechtse Heuvelrug is the largest forest area in the Netherlands. During the route, besides forest paths, you also pass the beautiful Soesterduinen. This in turn provides beautiful views.
Satisfied and relaxed
Once back at the hotel, it is time to relax and take a relaxing shower. The package includes a three-course evening dinner. The food is delicious and diverse. The nice thing is that there is something from every continent on the menu. The nod to the hotel's name, Kontakt der Kontinenten, is also reflected in the menu. Nice details that you might not immediately expect. In any case, we headed for the room with a well-filled stomach and a satisfied feeling. That king-size bed looked appealing upon entering.
Napping
After a wonderful night, it is time to enjoy the extensive breakfast buffet. Again, a lot of thought has gone into what you are served. Many products are freshly prepared, from fried eggs and croissants to pancakes. Also during breakfast, you 'take a journey' through the different continents. Maybe that's the idea, that you also 'connect' that way. Or Kontakt, old spelling.
The hotel and its history
The tour of the hotel is perhaps as much fun as cycling around the area. Our guide can tell us a lot about the history of the building and the space around it. Until the year 1960, the building was used to train young men to become priest-missionaries. These were then sent out to mission areas. In 1961, Kontakt der Kontinenten was established as a study centre for them. In the year 1999, the sisters left the convent and this building was also added to Kontakt der Kontinenten.
Time to go
After the tour, it is unfortunately time to check out. Outside, it is snert weather and since we are a stone's throw from the National Military Museum, we head in that direction. The museum focuses on the significance of the Dutch armed forces in the past, present and future with extra attention to the collections of army and air force. Around the museum you'll also find Park Vliegbasis Soesterberg, with its landing strip. Also very fun to cycle over!
In conclusion
Are you looking for a beautiful cycling environment, with lots of activities nearby? Then we can definitely recommend this hotel and the Soesterberg area. It is very easy to reach by both car and public transport. In addition, you are almost directly on the most beautiful cycling routes in the area, both for MTB, but also for gravel or road bikes.
