Spain is a country par excellence for cycling. The Pyrenees, the Basque Country, Catalonia, Asturias, Andalusia and the coast around Calpe, plus Mallorca and the Canary Islands. With the Spanish cuisine, the wine and the respect for cyclists on the road, everything works out just fine.
Northern Spain
Catalonia, the Basque Country, Aragon, Castile and León, Galicia and Navarre. Catalonia has the cycling capital Girona, the Basque Country has the rugged coast and steep climbs, Asturias has the Lagos de Covadonga and the notorious Angliru.
Central Spain and the east coast
More plains and space in Castile-La Mancha and the south of Aragon. On the coast are Valencia, Calpe and Alicante: the Costa Blanca, with the finest climbs in the country, just a stone's throw from the sea.
South of Spain
Andalusia and Murcia are the ultimate winter destinations. Around Málaga, Granada and Seville you’ll find beautiful routes, and the Sierra Nevada is the ultimate climbing challenge.
The islands
Mallorca is a cycling paradise with the Serra de Tramuntana and the descent of Sa Calobra. On the Canary Islands you can cycle all year round: El Teide on Tenerife, Gran Canaria where there are no flat meters, and Lanzarote for the triathletes.
When are you leaving?
- Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best times: mild weather and less crowds.
- In the winter, the south and the islands are at their best.
- July and August are often very hot in the interior and the mountains; choose the Pyrenees or the green north instead.
- Please note: from November to January, many hotels and restaurants in tourist coastal towns are closed.
How do you get there?
- Airplane: the easiest option, with direct flights to destinations such as Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Málaga, Mallorca and the Canary Islands.
- Train: via Paris by TGV to Barcelona and Girona.
- Car: The north is easily explored in just over a day, with a stopover in France. Advantage: Bring your own bike.
This is how we calculate: We calculate distances and travel times starting from Utrecht. Our flights always depart from Schiphol, Rotterdam The Hague Airport or Eindhoven Airport.
