Why we as Cycling Destination are crazy about cycling (and why everyone should do something about it)

We are a platform for cycle tourism. We are the starting point for your next cycling adventure. We do so from passion and from the idea that everyone should be on their bikes more. It makes you fit, cheerful, stimulates creativity. You name it. An additional advantage, if we then turn to more of a business approach, is that cycling regions benefit from good 'infrastructure'. What exactly is that?

  • Think roads
  • Signage
  • Routes
  • Bicycle-friendly hotels, Cafes, Restaurants
  • An event (or several) you can participate in as a tourist
  • A favourable climate

Putting this all together, almost any destination can be a cycling destination.

Cyle Tourism Forum outcomes

That this is seen by many regions is evident from the press requests we receive for trips, but also for other collaborations. Not only from the 'classic' cycling regions like Italy (think Tuscany, Emilia Romagna) but also from more unknown regions. Cycling is trending, is sustainable.

This was underlined once again at the Fiera del Cicloturismo in Bologna, in early April 2024. During this event, you could discover many regions. From Italy: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Piedmont, Puglia, Sicily, Tuscany and Veneto. Beyond: Spain, Catalonia, Gran Canaria, the Algarve in Portugal, Turkey, Flanders, Croatia, Slovenia, Belgium and Jordan. The latter is best known for Petra, the 'wonder of the world'. But now, therefore, full on cycle tourism.

Roaring figures

The fourth report on figures in the cycle tourism sector, issued by Isnart and Legambiente in collaboration with Bikenomist and presented at the Forum, has confirmed that cycle tourism is characterised as one of the segments with a strong growth trend in the tourism sector in Italy, with 56.8 million visitors in 2023, an economic impact of over €5.5 billion, up from 35% in 2022 and 19% in 2019 (4.6 billion).

Cycling in the City

As we ourselves have done before in collaboration with the city Dusseldorf in relation to Cyclingworld, was also seen here. A number of beautiful cycling routes in and around the city provided the right setting. That combined with workshops by Bikeitalia and an extensive test track, make an event like this a great starting point for a successful cycling season for city, visitor and also region.

Why is this interesting?

You see this kind of event being organised more and more. You also see that such events (also a cycling and walking fair in the Netherlands and Belgium, are a great starting point not only for us, but also for you, for example. You can at least see which regions are betting on more cycle tourism. Like this year with Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna and the Tour de France starts 2024. On that, Toscana Promozione Turistica director Francesco Tapinassi says: "By being present, Tuscany confirms the attention the region cherishes for bicycle tourism. Thanks to the extraordinary opportunity to start the Tour de France in Florence, the communication campaign dedicated to cycling tourism has become even stronger."
