Emilia-Romagna is one of the largest regions in Italia. Anyone who says Emilia-Romagna actually mentions Marco Pantani's name in the same breath. Il Elefantino (or sometimes Il Pirata, after the bandana on his head) lives here as if he never left us. This is evident once again during the official press conference of the Tour de France start 2024. Pantani's name drops and spontaneous applause ensues. Not surprising when you know that he was so much more for Italy, cycling and especially in combination with the Tour. It is therefore also the perfect tribute to the slender climber with the bald head that the very first Grande Partenza takes place in Emilia Romagna. We were invited to the European Media Cycling Contest in Cesenatico. We enjoyed ourselves and we think these are the 5 reasons to visit Emilia-Romagna in 2024.

The Tour de France 2024

On 29 June 2024, the riders will start in Tuscany (yes, definitely) but finish the first stage in Rimini, on the Adriatic coast. This seaside resort, where many young people have been holidaying for years, is keen to build more sustainable tourism. The Tour de France is a nice springboard, to turn over 750,000 annual cycling tourists into even more. In Stage two, we will start to see many odes to Pantani. From Cesenatico, via Montecino and Gallisterna, the riders ride towards Bologna. Here they ride part of the 2020 World Cup around Imola. These two stages alone provide enough inspiration for you as an enthusiastic cyclist to come here. And if you can catch a glimpse of the pros at the same time, that's a double bonus.

Diverse landscape

The diversity of the landscape is unprecedented: Emilia-Romagna is very diverse. Not only do you have the vast Adriatic coast (which, in terms of views, is somewhat blocked by the many private beaches, a culture thingy. You'll also find rolling hills, vineyards and beautiful medieval towns and villages. From the coast, you can already see the mountain range of the Apennines. Whether you prefer a coffee run, or go for a serious climbing holiday, Emilia-Romagna has it. Not to mention the opportunity to tick off city-state San Marino. San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world. A nice list to tick off once. Maybe not the most beautiful place, but it's still nice to be able to say you've been there. A visit to Cesenatico is also a must. It is a town with a striking boulevard, but above all a beautiful port, which, according to tradition, was designed by Leonardo himself.

Bicycle-friendly Hotels:

Emilia Romagna is known for its cycling culture and has numerous bicycle-friendly hotels where you can stay. These bike hotels have access to a (locked) bike cellar, cleaning areas, and many more services for cyclists. We give you three tips in advance:

  1. Hotel Belvedere, Riccione: Hotel Belvedere in Riccione is a cyclist's paradise. Not only does it offer comfortable accommodation, but also a special programme aimed at cyclists. They have bike rental, secure storage for bikes and even a bike washing station. After your ride, you can relax in the wellness centre and enjoy delicious meals tailored to the needs of cyclists.
  2. Lungomare Bike Hotel, Cesenatico: The Lungomare Bike Hotel in Cesenatico is located on the coast and is perfect for cyclists who want to combine the sea and cycling. There are special bike packages, they have a bike garage and you can also rent (the latest) Pinarello Dogmas. The restaurant has an extensive buffet, both in the morning and in the evening.
  3. Bike Hotel Dory, Riccione: Bike Hotel Dory in Riccione is an accredited cycling hotel that offers everything a cyclist needs. They have expert guides, an extensive bike workshop and even a physiotherapy centre for post-ride recovery. The rooms are comfortable and suitable for cyclists, and the restaurant serves high-energy meals.

Granfondos were invented here

Emilia Romagna organises a trio of not-to-be-missed GranFondo/Cyclosportive events suitable for cyclists of all levels:

  • Nove Colli: If you had ever wanted to ride a GranFondo, the Nove Colli is the mother of all GranFondos. The oldest of its kind goes over (you guessed it) nine hills. The course takes you past charming villages, challenging climbs and the beautiful Adriatic coast. Whether you want to conquer all nine hills or just enjoy the ride, Nove Colli promises an unforgettable cycling experience. With climbs such as 'Polenta', 'Ciola' and 'Barbotto', you can get your legs well warmed up.
  • Granfondo le Cime di Romagna - Explore the rugged beauty of the Romagna region in this challenging event. The Granfondo le cime di Romagna offers multiple routes (including a 131-kilometre granfondo and 1,800 altimeters) that wind through rolling hills and picturesque vineyards, showcasing the region's enchanting countryside. In total, you have three options, each with its own charm. The start is in Faenze, hometown of Davide Cassani
  • Granfondo Via del Sale - routes along the coast: For a unique adventure where the Adriatic coastline plays an important role, the Granfondo Via del Sale is a must. This event takes you past picturesque villages in the Cervia and Ravenna region, offering beautiful views of the sea and a touch of local culture. It is a mix of rolling terrain and stretches along the coast that make this an unforgettable ride.

Bicycle-friendly

Ok, just a disclaimer. I say bicycle-friendly, but that's not quite the billiard cloth we're used to in the Netherlands. Bike-friendly mainly means that cycling is alive and well here. Pantani lives, but that is obvious by now. There is a huge network of cycle paths along the waterfront and dedicated cycle lanes inland as well. These then also stop abruptly, but this way you can often avoid the madness of Italian traffic. In total, there are 1285 kilometres of cycle lanes in the region. Head inland and the traffic disappears like snow in the sun. Extra tip: are you going to Ferrara? If so, you might find the most bikes in Italy there. The city is the 'cycling capital of Italy' and also throws high marks Europe.

Conclusion

Emilia Romagna, with its combination of natural beauty, cycling-friendly accommodation and events, is a cyclist's paradise. Whether you plan to ride the Tour de France in 2024 visit or explore the region's enchanting countryside through its various events this Italian gem promises an unforgettable cycling experience. Pack your bike, embrace the challenge and get ready to discover why Emilia-Romagna is the ultimate destination for cyclists in 2024.
